Brexit and the Consequences

I have just watched Davis's performance in front of the Select Committee and I thought it was rather polished. Certainly, the questioners gave up trying to find any cracks in the narrative pretty early on. The rest of the time was filled up with nonsense, probably designed to make him late for another appointment.

Conclusion: nothing to see here, move along.

Glad you thought it was polished. I didn’t.

He had humble pie in the National Interest I reckon.

Treachery and contempt of parliament maybe but releasing any impact assessment would, I believe have been against the National Interest.

He did what he had to do!

I think brexit is going to take a couple of years so we shoudn't expect that currency will go up and down rapidly because of it.

Crummy politicians are just another hurdle that business people have to climb over. Then they are likely to waste it on more submarines etc.

The Remainers still refuse to accede to the democratic will of the people.

So did the people vote to leave whatever the cost or with the optimistic and rosy rhetoric of the leave campaign in mind?

In our representational democracy I rely on my representative to act in their judgement of what is in the best interests of the country and I expect parliament to have the power to do just that.

They might have lost the argument, but the remainers views are still valid when it comes to whatever “deal” finishes up on the table and you can’t just muzzle views you don’t like.

If you want a dictatorship that brooks no opposition then go live in one.

What the "rebels" actually have done is to weaken representational democracy. The government had already agreed to give them a vote on the outcome but no, they have to explore every avenue that might just delay things and lead to a fresh government and might, just might, stop us from executing Brexit. Sadly, by undermining the authority of the government and the Prime Minister all they have done is to make the possibility of a Corbyn government come one step closer.

I suspect that those whom have never lived under a socialist government, let alone a Trotskyist one, will come to learn of its disadvantages the hard way.

Amen to that.

So far as the other is concerned if what the Government had offered by way of a vote was in any way meaningful then they need have no worries since yesterday’s vote just solidifies it.

One of the strengths of our democracy is that governments can’t just ride roughshod over parliament. In a popular phrase parliament has “taken back control”.

I agree with you in principle and I hope that you're right. Nevertheless I suspect that the "rebels" have different motives.

I don’t hold out much hope - today’s brexiteers leaders were yesterday’s Tory rebels and seem to have carried the day (more’s the pity :)). I doubt that we will ever know if the electorate go along with whatever transpires since any Government will be forever scared stiff of any referendum

Here's a new political gimmick: why don't we have a referendum on whether we should have referendums? This would take the punters' minds off anything important and allow the government to get on and do what it wants without any interference. No need to go down the Corbyn route!

Corbyn by default? A scary thought. I suspect that a lot of Tory and a lot of New Labour voters will just sit on their hands or vote for a party that has no chance of getting any power under the present system. There will now be vast swathes of people without a party that represents them.
