U.S. stocks turn lower after FOMC statement

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) --- U.S. stocks turned sharply lower Wednesday as investors interpreted a change in the wording of the Federal Reserve's policy statement as a signal that it is preparing the market for a rise in interest rates.
The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged at their current 45-year low of 1 percent but said "with inflation quite low and resource use slack, the committee believes that it can be patient in removing its policy accommodation."
Previously, the Fed promised to keep rates low "for a considerable period."
Alfred Kugel, senior investment strategist at Stein Roe said the new wording suggested that the time before an interest rate hike "might not be so considerable."
