Brexit and the Consequences

It's like I said months ago. What we are witnessing is a resurgence of tribalism. When large groups get to the point where they see minority interests being put ahead of everyone's general interest, then they kick out at those who have lost sight of the bigger picture.

France is typical of a country which has become fragmented and lost sight of it's identity. Anyway, there isn't much to debate. The direction of travel is clear and there is nothing the liberal elites can do about it.

What you're witnessing is a resurgence of manipulative demagoguery. The "liberal elite" is no more culpable than the conservative elite. What's needed is someone who is more interested in the welfare of his country than in his own power.

Each country will play out differently of course. The UK should be fine, given that we have a long history of tolerance and fairness. Brexit was just a gentle reminder to our government that they needed to focus and reprioritise. Leaving the EU will make for much better governance of the UK, and the people's job of monitoring our own politicians that much easier, as they will have no hiding place.

La Penn called the people protesting after some young person was raped scum for protesting.

Now one police officer is under arrest along with another 3 for not doing anything but watch the rape.

She's one sick puppy much like Trump. She'll play the politics instead of finding out facts of the matter and standing up for what's right or what's wrong?

What a great prospect waiting to make the country of Liberty and Freedom great again by abusing those who are weak and powerless.

Like Austria however, I'm almost certain good people of France, Holland and Germany will be more aware of the dangers of the right wing and keep them at bay. Otherwise, I think we can all guess the outcomes that will follow.

I hope you are right CV (y)

If LePen has the populist appeal of Trump, she's in trouble.

Le Pen's position is probably closer to Trump's position than that of the UK.

Both of them are battling massive corruption of their ruling classes and systems, not to mention the completely biased press and news outlets.

That "long history of tolerance and fairness" has become rather tattered given the current attitude toward immigration and minorities.

They're not "battling massive corruption of their ruling classes and systems". They're striving toward becoming their own ruling class.

It's just simple rebalancing. When numbers are under control and more importantly, seen to be under control, then everything will get back to normal.

No country will be immune from this new direction of travel. It's up to governments to ensure they are listening to the people, otherwise, face the consequences.

It's also One of the main reasons why the EU will collapse.

That's not what Trump said in his inauguration speech. He said, drain the swamp and give the power back to the people. That will be the test and his struggle will be so massive, that I think it unlikely he will achieve it.

Perhaps. But from what I've read in your press, that seems unlikely.

Governments aren't "listening to the people". Rather they are telling the people what to think.

It's also One of the main reasons why the EU will collapse.

If the EU collapses, it will be because member nations abandon it rather than work toward fixing it.

Actions speak louder than words.

It doesn't matter what is read in the press, they are just espousing the view of the Liberal elite and can therefore be disregarded.

Well the days of Government telling people what to think are well and truly over.
Government's are being forced to listen. That's the whole point of voting outcomes like Brexit and Trump. Of course, others will be forced down the same path of "enforced listening" !

No, it will collapse because the people of each country who's views and aims are diametrically opposed to those of the EU. The EU is an organisation incapable of listening let alone make any meaningful changes.

He is the swamp.

So fix it. Splitting up into separate factions isn't anywhere near as powerful as banding together. That's been the case for millennia.

Sounds like some form of left wing socialist, communist utopia. Anyway, No thanks.

We are fixing it, hence the Brexit vote. What comes after the EU's demise is anyone's guess. :)

I don't believe there are many factions, the split appears to be roughly 50/50 across the voters of all nations with no one side having a particular edge. Other than the side that gets the most votes [emoji3]

How many member nations are there in the EU?

How does abandoning it fix it?

Because it's an organisation not fit for purpose. The reasons being too numerous to keep going over, but they are all here in the thread.

Everyone will be far better off when the EU is consigned to the dustbin of history, where it belongs.

Certainly those who want to see Europe divided will be better off.
