Oh boy you left yourself wide open there...

New York, New York so good they named it after an English city.

Plus a few hundred more American places who got their name from the glorious Blighty.

Is Milton Keynes actual a real place? I thought it was a joke made up by Terry Wogan.

Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire

I hope your statement about Milton Keynes was a joke.

I brought up Milton Keynes, not because it was named after an American, but because it was named after an American capitalist. The irony is in the fact that England is just a shade away from socialistm.

Yes, many cities are named after English places and most of them are dreadful places to live. Both New York and Yorkshire are nowhere I would want to live. New York has a very high homicide rate.

Compton is named after Compton, Berkshire, which is the 8th most dangerous city in America.

Birmingham, Alabama (hick central) is about as bad as Birmingham, UK (the gun capital of the UK).

Westminster is a lower income city inland city unlike Westminster, UK.

Maybe Americans named these cities after their English counterparts because of their disdain. Naming crime ridden and/or ugly cities after something else seems like the ultimate slap in the face.

After running out of names such as Dodge ( the bullets ) City the US citizens tended to name their new town after the City or area they had left in the old world, like York with a new in front, New England, New Hampshire, Boston etc. There is probably another Berlin or Bismark for the German immigrants. St Petersburg for the Russian immigrants etc.

Would you believe it Milton Keynes was designed by an American !

The radical grid plan was inspired by the work of Californian urban theorist Melvin M Webber (1921–2006), described by the founding architect of Milton Keynes, Derek Walker, as the city's "father".[45] Webber thought that telecommunications meant that the old idea of a city as a concentric cluster was out of date and that cities that enabled people to travel around them readily would be the thing of the future, achieving "community without propinquity" for residents.[46]

I am so glad you can copy and paste from Wikipedia. If you are going use at least remove the [46] or type in the source for which it is a footnote.

Secondly, you guys have missed the point or glossed over it again. All the cities named after English ones are crime ridden and ugly. That would be like naming your charity after a mass murderer. Why make a negative association with names unless it was purposeful. America gained independence because they did not like the English way of life.

Some of the names have nothing to do with England and more to do with old English.
-ton = town or city
-feld = -field = a clearing in the woods
...

St. Petersburg, FL doesn't have an Russians. Again, I will state that St. Petersburg has a high level of poverty. Boston has an off-the-chart level of crime...

Let me enlighten you, America gained independence because they were against paying taxes to help pay for the war saving them from the Indians and French.

The whole of the USA is crime ridden and has been since the flotsam and jetsam of people got there. The English are not to blame for that. The US system of justice is to blame for not stamping out crime or at least keeping it under some control. The 5th amendment is a joke !

Another reason why future Americans left is that titles and nobility are banned. What an archaic tradition.

The USA has it's own hierarchy. Largely based on wealth, not morality or good works. The rich lord it over the poor and grind the workers into the dirt. No slaves anymore ? Just economic slaves and rubbish dreams of getting somewhere. Racialism is everywhere.

The American philosophy can be reduced to 2 words basically. Selfishness and greed. You guys are still calling the shots but it will come back to haunt you, when nobody gives a stuff if you live or die. Sad really.

You still haven't told me where you live in the UK. Why don't we compare the crime where I live with the UK. This brings me back to several threads.

America leads the way in entrepreneurship
Forum

This isn't Europe, we can't all be feckless oafs leeching off a socialist government. Free housing, free health care and what's next why bother being entrepreneurial when the government will spend itself into oblivion paying for all that. America's debt is from taking care of the world because everyone else is too lazy, broke and small to do anything worth while. The only thing keeping the eurozone afloat is Germany. The pound has fallen more than 25% since 2008. Talk about a lousy economy. I hope none of you are using IBMs, HPs, anything from Microsoft or Apple to type your messages here. They are all American companies. Perhaps you should buy a British made computer. What's that you say, all the biggest companies are American, German or Chinese. Ahh too bad about your flailing economy of $2.5 trillion.

The Next US President
You are changing the subject to crime. Surely much of the crime is forced by the poverty people find themselves in and some by greedy people

No I am not changing the subject. 30 years ago people made more relative to the cost-of-living than they do now which made it easier for most people to buy a house even in a decent neighborhood. However, as certain minorities moved into certain neighborhoods they didn't take care of their property as much. For example, not watering lawns, not keeping up their property,..., which made people upset because the house prices dropped. They decide to move out to another place and more minorities move in. They then become the majority in that neighborhood. As this happens the prices begin the fall because people no longer want to live there not because minorities lives there but because it is no longer an appealing, safe place to live. It is a simple psychological fact about human nature that if all your neighbors are in really good physical shape you are more likely to want to be in good physical shape. If however all your neighbors are really unhealthy you are more likely to follow in their footsteps. It follows that if all your neighbors do not take care of their properties you are less likely to take care of your property. As the neighborhood becomes more seedy due to declining property values, more criminal elements will pop up. This is where the crime comes in. Crime begets crime. Move forward to present day and you can see the results of this.

I originally stated was that this should not happen. Now the differential between property values create more of a buffer.

Case in point being if you have a neighbor that has a tree that always drops leaves into your yard and their yard. You will have to rake up the leaves and you will get tired of doing this. Why should you have to clean up after them?

Returning to the argument about presidents, we need a president who isn't afraid to get things done. I would be most upset about electing a leader who has to listen to a group of people in another country. hint hint

You mean racism. :p

Racialism is the belief that the human species is naturally divided into distinct biological categories called "races."

Racism is the belief that one race is superior to the other.

If you mean racist ignoranuses then I'm with you Pat, but not all Americans.

Let's not allow one crack head to cloud our judgement. Some people are simply full of them selves all the way from their crevices up to space between their ears.

With all due respect I would rather you didn't turn up on my doorstep. As for crime in this area ? I think the last crime was some months ago, a bicycle disappeared. But was found outside the local shop sometime later.

Did you read that story of some youth in the USA this week suing for millions of dollars for being arrested. Let's hope our judges don't copy that ridiculousness.
