I see a problem here? Traditionally most Westernised countries around the globe have looked to the UK as the birthplace of democratic ideology and followed the same model more or less, non-Westernised countries have followed other ideologies ie Communist ideologies e.g China, Russian or Islamic ideologies e.g. Saudi, Iran, Pakistan.

If UK democracy goes down the totalitarian route which is appears to be sliding towards, then a new ideology will need to be invented for the Western world to follow.

I'll vote the Totalitarian party at the next election, call it LibLabCon for short 😀

The 630 on the Aquarius are just a handful compared to what the Spanish Coastguard is picking up out of the water, hundreds of whom are, already dead. Over 900 were rescued last weekend, alone.

You, in the UK, are lucky that you do not have that moral problem--just listen to what the politicians say and get the pictures on the tv. Armchair politics. Spain and Italy are on the front line so, what are we going to do---let them drown?

I believe that EU will bring in legislation. In the meantime, we have no moral choice in the matter.

So much for global aid to Africa. If those countries were not so badly managed then this migration issue wouldn't be a problem. The lack of education there and subsequent belief that they can just go anywhere they want expecting everything for free shows how disruptive Africa is on a global scale. Can you imagine what a powerhouse it could be if it were like the USA

True. But it is not, only, Africa. Its from all over Asia.,too.

In fact, and the young Europeans and New Worlders have to face it---it's the future.

Totally agree, the UK is lucky not to have to deal with this problem, I wonder what the result would be if we did have to deal with it directly, the populations around the coasts of England would probably be up in arms about it. But as concerned neighbours, it is not something we delight in seeing happening to beautiful parts of Europe either. A problem of immense proportions. I suppose that the migrant camps in Calais are a similar issue for the UK, although those camps don't seem to have the people traffickers running amok putting people on rubber dingys with just enough fuel to get them into international waters before they are rescued by NGOs and/or Navy's.

I understand that the Italian Navy are still performing rescue duties where they can, despite not allowing them to land. Where is Malta in all of this, what about France? There has been speculation that Tunisia is the nearest safe port for these migrants, but we all know it's not about safe ports in Africa and it's all about Europe, and people trafficking and politics......

Maybe Spain should be applying more pressure onto the EU in an attempt to change it's policies...exactly the point I was making about regime changes in other countries as a direct result of the migrant problem, is it going happen in Spain now, time will tell?

It would be good if some of the safe Middle Eastern/Asian countries could have migrant quotas placed upon them, that might ease the EU burden. But wait, there are no safe and tolerant countries in the Middle East or in Asia, hmmmm....

Thanks for the interest.

I am not hopeful for any successful legislation. The people coming over from other continents are desperate and willing to die in their efforts to get to Europe. To deal with that is mindboggling.However, any effort on the part of EU is welcome. At least, they will be attempting something.

Stopping the "people smugglers" is the first job. But would that be as difficult to do as stopping the drug sindicates? That, so far, as proved impossible.

As I said before. This is the future---as it has been the past. The Europeans have settled in all parts of the globe--much to the detriment of the tribes, Indian, Eskimo, Aboriginal, etc. Tossed Out of their lands and herded into reservations and their natural resources eg.bison, killed for sport.

The world human population is doubling every fifty years. They've got to go somewhere!

In the past the dominating humans won, the indigenous populations were beaten by force and violence until they submitted to the will of the invaders.

When the citizens of Europe are not protected from a dominant force by their governments, but their governments are actually complicit in their own potential downfall then there is certainly no comparison with the past. The first duty of a government is to protect its citizens, if they fail in that duty then they no longer have the support of its citizens.
