I have a quiz for all the 50 000 traders in this room . Hope this generates some useful insight into the world of trading and technical analysis.

IS THERE ANY TECHNICAL ADVANTAGE GAINED BY TRADING IN A PARTICULAR TIME FRAME SUCH AS ( DAILY ,60 MIN , 10 MIN, 5MIN , 1 MIN ) or are they all a ROULETTE TABLES WITH JUST DIFFERENT DIAMETER ? ( ignore the commion Charges).

I particularly invite MR CHART to contribute ..

Morning Grey and all

Just for my way of trading i simply use the 5 minute time frame for scalping using 3 moving averages and 3 indicators on my default chart.

If a person is swing trading then daily candle charts are the way to go for entry and exits if you ask me.

It's all conjecture since it really depends on one's current mind set. Just depends more on your time frame for a trade.

I could not scalp off a daily, nor could i swing off a 5 minute chart either.

So for all intents and purposes it's up to each trader using the tools and tactics and time frames that suit their trading goals...

see you in the room this morning... we have GDP at 8.30........................... :cheesy:

In my view, if you dynamically adjust $ @ RISK for various time frames then there is no real technical advantage other than personal preference.

A lot of it depends on what type of trader you are, its vital to be honest with yourself. Some people may not be suited to trading the shorter time frames whilst others may not have the patience required with longer ones.

I think the common held belief is that there is more "noise" associated with shorter time frames, which I suppose is a logical conclusion to make although I am not too sure if it is correct.

Interesting question regarding time frames Grey1.

Perhaps the answer is not a general rule (e.g LONG is much better than / equally as good as / absolutely shocking compared to SHORT) but specific to the current situation.

There may be an advantage to trading from one particular time frame (with an eye on those around it too, of course) while the dominant pulse is easiest to read in that time frame. There are times when fine detail may give the best view (e.g. during extreme volatility such as post FOMC, NFP etc.) and others when more distance reveals the cleanest waves. (I apologise for having said that about ten times already on this site )

Technically it is easier to predict what is likely to happen a short time away than a long time away. There is less time for surprises. So in this respect a micro time frame may offer an advantage over a longer one - higher probability trades - though the more microscopic one goes, the more commissions are incurred (assuming quick exits). But I agree with the earlier poster who said there is more money in shorter time frames. Well, there should be because one is working much harder and more frequently than, say, the position trader who puts on three or four trades a month.

On the other hand, if the market is fractal and random then mathematically there shouldn't be an advantage to any choice of wavelength, as long as position sizing etc. is scaled up or down appropriately.

Does it matter, to oversimplify hideously, if I trade off a 1 minute chart with a 5 point stop loss and 10 point target using 60 lots or off a 30 min chart with a 150 point stop loss, a 300 point target using 2 lots? Assuming I am equally proficient in both time frames then as far as my capital is concerned, no. However this ignores the vital time factor, an opportunity cost. Trader A can make several trades per day whereas Trader B clearly will not. Thus Trader A can make more money in the same time for the same risk. Frequency is good.

Also I think that because the market isn't random then some advantage is offered by the smaller fractals as I said before. But this may be just down to my psychology. I can't read an EOD chart to save my life. One man's noise is another's music, to adopt the phrase of mr marcus.

Finally who's to say one can't take a scalp off a tiny time frame that happily turns into a day trade that turns into a swing trade. If it keeps going your way then you can hang onto it for very little initial risk. In this way perhaps you make use of several time frames to your advantage, zooming and scaling out as the trade keeps running. I believe Naz does this a lot.

Some great moves this morning including AAPL and RACK of course.

Did anyone catch the incredible up move by MICC?

Here are the technicals for it:

And don't forget the free EOD scans available for Jerry's room and everyone available from my site.

Grey1

In my view there is no real advantage as long as you use the appropriate position size relative to starting capital and ATR in the timeframe that you are trading.

I am going to answer my Quiz. Awesome contributions by Chicken curry , Frugi , specially blue chip .

Blue chip you are spot on

The quiz was if there is any advantage gained in using a particular time frame . In another word is 5 min better than 1 min and so on . The answer is NOT WHAT SO EVER . How ever if you used few different time frames in combination the answer is YES .. This is the principle of MULTI TIME FRAME ANALYSIS and as Frudgi correctly said since the market is not random then this principle can lead to an edge in trading .

Now.

I am going to explain what Blue chip pointed out and this is the most important aspect of risk and money management but no one on this BB specially our coaches don’t even mention it let alone apply it .

Different time frames have different volatility . Different volatility in turn means different degree of risk .. We control risk by position sizing there fore we need to apply correct pos sizing when we trade. SIMPLE … you have to remember this for the rest of your trading life. This is How you control your Risk.

SO to start the ball rolling you need to read about different ways of measuring volatility intra day . once you done that you can calculate your position size for different time frames..

The final product should be a real time position size calculator … ( please see my previous set ups on this thread and see how the pos size is calculated dynamically ) .

What is all this about ? so what if I have a dynamic calculator ?

Lets say you calculated the correct position size as follow

5 MIN chart APPL 850 ( number of shares )
3 MIN chart AAPL 1000 ( number of shares )
1 Min chart AAPl 1500 ( number of shares )

You get a BUY signal on the 5 min chart then you go long 850. you then might get a long signal on the 3 min chart then you in crease your position to 1000 and finally if you had a long signal on the 1 min chart then you increase your pos size to 1500

VISA VERSA for dumping . if you was long 1500 and 1 min went against you then you dump 500 and so on

This is called dynamic position sizing and this is what I do every day .. I invite people to wise up and learn about these things and stop chasing ENTRY /EXIT holy grail all the time ..

IS NOT AMAZING WELL RESPECTED TRADERS ON THIS SITE DODGE THIS SUBJECT .. Grrrrrrrrrrr

Pssstt no more trading for me and this is the final win

BTW those of you who find this info useful can pray for my soul. You can give your cash to coaches lol

Come on Bramble I am ready for your questions lol and you know me I am never scared of solid , well thought , logical questions that you often ask other traders .

Top post G1.

This is exactly how I size my position / swing trades but I had never considered it for intraday multiple time frame positioning or pairs.

For those who want to read about position sizing "Trade Your Way To Financial Freedom" by Van Tharp is a reasonable place to start.

"Van Tharp cuts right to the essence of professional trading: how to develop winning attitudes and approaches; how to forget trading for accuracy and trade for expectancy; how to master position sizing. If you intend to trade, you'd better know what's in this book." -- Ed Seykota

Sorry Grey1, only just seen this.

I only ask questions when there is ambiguity, lack of clarity or apparent discrepancies. Or in some cases, just plain lack of anything discernible. Being extraordinarily thick myself, it's easy for me to not understand very much at all.

But no. No questions on this one. Excellent post.

Got cought in the market sell off as I did not have time to close position in time so i lost a good chunk of the profit. I am annoyed . On the positive side i was around 80% hedged which kept me in the profit even though market went against me . All in all i am not happy . It is not matter of win now, It is matter of getting cought and feel just P***D off. Grrrrrrrrrrr

I am mentoring some one from this BB 2morrow so i might not be able trade as much as I want as once I start on Technical analysis I cannot stop yapping .
