House GOP Moves to Ram Through Bill That Gives Trump Unilateral Power to Kill Nonprofits
Dozens of Democrats still support the bill — giving the Republican-controlled House plenty of breathing room to pass it next week.

A controversial “nonprofit killer” bill is back on track after it was blocked earlier this week.

A majority of Democrats in the House of Representatives rejected the bill on Tuesday out of fear that it could grant President-elect Donald Trump the legal tools with which to target his ideological foes, but Republicans are swiftly pressing ahead.

The Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, which would empower the secretary of the Treasury to designate any nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization” and revoke its tax-exempt status, is set to go before the Committee on Rules on Monday for a hearing that could tee up the bill for a new floor vote.

A bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives is pressing ahead with a terrifying bill that would give the Trump administration unilateral authority to strip the nonprofit status of any organization that criticizes or questions him, including The Intercept.

The bill, titled the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, would grant the Treasury secretary power to revoke the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit deemed to be “terrorist supporting.”

Once that happens, the group wouldn’t be able to collect donations, pay staff, or get banking services. Trump wouldn’t have to provide evidence or even an explanation. The administration could simply issue a notice, and the organization would be effectively shut down.

Believe it or not, 52 House Democrats voted for it.

Make no mistake: If this bill is signed into law — and with a Republican trifecta only weeks away, that is a very real possibility — The Intercept and every nonprofit organization in America that dares to stand up to Trump will be in existential danger.

On a Thursday afternoon towards the end of last month, a 59-year-old Palestinian woman set out to gather olives on her family’s land near the village of Faqqua, in the north of the occupied West Bank.

It was something that Hanan Abu Salameh had done for decades.

Within minutes, the mother of seven and grandmother of 14 lay dying in the dust of the olive grove, with a bullet wound in her chest - she’d been shot by an Israeli soldier.

Even though the family had co-ordinated their intention to pick olives with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), according to her son Fares and husband Hossam, the soldier fired several shots as other family members fled for cover.

The IDF says it’s investigating the incident, but Hanan’s grieving relatives have little hope or expectation that her killer will be brought to justice.

This wasn’t an isolated incident.

Israel/Mossad/CIA/CFR assassinated The Kennedy’s, That’s why the government doesn’t release the files.

JFK & William Fulbright of the senate committee on foreign relations were planning on registering the “American Zionist Council” as a foreign agent. The Zionist council became what is today called “AIPAC”.“

One day after I am long gone, you will remember me and say, we should have stopped thr nuclear program of Israel, abolished the Federal Reserve and kicked all secret societies, occultists, usurpers and Zionists out of our wonderful country, to keep it that way, but it is never too late, just remember that.” - John F. Chess nut Bobby Fischer said it, not Kennedy.
The quote "One day after I am long gone, you will remember me and say, we should have stopped the nuclear program of Israel, abolished the Federal Reserve and kicked all secret societies, occultists, usurpers and Zionists out of our wonderful country, to keep it that way, but it is never too late, just remember that" is often attributed to Bobby Fischer. Yes fairly good assessment however, to summarise, UK was the first country to go through what is now termed an industrial revolution which started off with the spinning jenny machine and the influx of of population from countryside into a town/city to work in factories (around 1745). The steam engine railway's powered by coal development was also coming to an end with the invention of the motor car and discovery of oil to power the car. Ships and the development of the aeroplane also raised the importance of oil. In general it wasn't just about powering the naval fleet. It was a much bigger and clear indication on the importance of oil that arose out of these new inventions as the industrial revolution raged on globally.

Hence, the switch from coal and steam to oil was pretty evident. Germany had risen and also developed and was now competing for raw materials and seeking to establish colonies of her own and challenging British conolies for those materials. So this was the background. Height of the British Empire was the great exhibition hosted by Prince Albert in 1851.

Sadly England and Germany through royal marriages could not form an alliance and if they had the two countries may well have been able to conquer the world??? Prince Albert and Queen Victorians reign was indeed supreme.

Instead WW1 broke out and UK suffered along with Germany only for them to repeat the whole episode in WW2.

Rise of the US and fall of the UK empire were one and the same. fwiw a similar episode is played out in our current era with US and UK encouraging Europe to spend more money on NATO and defence, fuelling their weapons industries at the expense of Europe and Russia fighting each other. It is quite sad and the true view but mass public do not have awareness of the bigger and strategic plays, orchestrated by the West. As I have said Germany was doing really well with much cheap gas and commodities from Russia before this Ukraine NATO fiasco kicked off.

Just a few more words, Lawrence of Arabia was the best James Bond (aka Spy) EVAR, as he managed to get the Arabs to rise againts the Ottomans (whom under they did very well for over 600 years) only to end up where we are today, being carved up with artificial borders that do not represent their tribal or religious affiliations and beliefs. Devide and Conquer works really well. Start a war and feed both sides with weapons for each other to kill them selves and the orchestrator makes money, new discoveries and potentially control of both sides who become dependent.

Even Russia and US talk and do deals under the diplomatic tables through backchat channels, dividing up little countries so they can both do well. France, UK, Russia and the US are top countries who participate in destablising countries to implement their puppet regimes. China takes a little different approach. They simply lend money and work the country supporting any leader who comes to power, trying to stay out of internal politics.

Good clip in highlighting some historic truths. 👍

I am sure Roy Casagranda will honour your approval critique and take stock of your follow up dissertation.

About Roy

I successfully defended my dissertation with the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin on May Day 2017. I am proud to be a Longhorn and grateful to Katie Arens, PhD my dissertation chair and my committee for the oppurtunity.

I am Professor of Government at Austin Community College (ACC).

My research interests lie at the intersection of politics, history, economics, psychology, and philosophy. I am a firm believer in a multidisciplinary approach. Circa 1025 A.D. Ibn Sina (Avicenna) said, "The knowledge of anything, since all things have causes, is not acquired or complete unless it is known by its causes." It is my belief that understand a the causes of a thing, many approaches are necessary.

I have been a teacher since spring of 1995. I began teaching at the college level in spring of 2002. There is nothing else that I would rather be doing.

I regularly give public lectures and news interviews. Since summer 2006 I have averaged around one public speaking event per month.

I am ACC's Middle East Affairs expert and have been doing television interviews since December 2008. As of late I have had the honor of doing several live interviews on KVUE (ABC) and Fox 7.

I am the founder and president of the Austin School, a student club and lecture series.

From September 2010 until early 2012 I wrote regularly for Merhnameh, a leading Tehran-based reformist socio-political monthly on US and Arab politics and history. I produced approximately one article every two to three months until the magazine was shut down by the Islamic Republic. I have also written one article for Hamshahri and another for Donya-e-Eqtesad Daily newspaper.

In the US I have written a piece for the Austin American Statesman as well as three articles for TODO Austin, each about the Arab Spring.

I wrote the University of Maryland University College's WWII classroom modules and I have edited two of Jason Mark's books on WWII: Island of Fire and Besieged.

I am currently on the Faculty Evaluation Committee for the Department of Government at ACC.

I am 12/32 Egyptian, 6/32 Italian, 5/32 Finnish, 3/32 German, 3/32 Arab, and 3/32 Swedish. I have lived in both Germany and Egypt and speak German and Arabic. I have also lived in Lebanon, Algeria, and England and have traveled much of central and eastern Europe as well as some of the Middle East.

Personal interests include travel, backpacking, camping, gardening, and playing Advanced Squad Leader.
