Brexit and the Consequences

Umm, unless I've completely misunderstood, this whole Brexit thing is about a new relationship with the EU that should hopefully remain in place for at least as long as the previous arrangement...so, it being January 1st, that would make this Day 1. What were you expecting? To my mind "nothing" would be about right and will continue to be for at least another few weeks/months. At least allow us a breather - we can then get back to to not having much of a job and those nasty Europeans can finish celebrating Frogmanay and perhaps after that "nothing" might slowly turn into "something" after all.

As far as trade is concerned, just business as usual, but that was never what Brexit was about.

To my mind it was about extracting the UK from a slow painful death by a thousand cuts, mostly economic as EU share of world trade declining YOY. Also extracted us from an additional, unnecessary layer of Government, which always allowed our own representatives the cop out excuse of, "it's not me gov", blame Brussels. So now there is no hiding place for our own useful idiots and the Brucie bonus being that we have managed to cut off another of their gravy trains, a position within the EU machine. The next part of the plan has to be taking the knife to the House of Lords in order to be fully match fit to compete on the world stage.

However, there is a fly in the oinkment. If Trump gets swindled out of his landslide win, then Globalism wins on Globalist terms which renders us all screwed.

Okay c_v, we're totally screwed: nothing like a cheery start to the new year!

Trump's lost his battle, IMO. Biden will be president and top of his 'to do' list will be to open the floodgates to any and all migrants that want to live in the U.S. Give them residency status and guess which party they'll vote for at the next election. And the one after than. And . . . It's a no-brainer and the same game played by the EU. It's simple, clever and very effective. It will take at least a generation - and probably a lot longer than that - for newly arrived migrants to even consider voting for parties other than the one that welcomed them with open arms.

I'm resigned to it, no point in fighting it, may as well embrace the new paradigm shift, a.k.a. the great reset and try to curb its more extreme measures. That's the best we can hope for. My guess is that possibly within the next decade, certainly the next twenty years, the benefits of Brexit that you've outlined will have been pretty much eroded and we'll be back to where we were: an integral part of this lovely big, cuddly, globalist family.

And a happy new year to you too.

Tim.

It'll be civil war then. Everyone will be forced to pick a side. Can't recall the Kraken, it's out there on the loose.

In other words, we cherry picked the deal in the UK's interests without all the obligatory nonsense that goes alongside EU membership. Which is exactly what we set out to do. The reason why it was achieved is simple. Because EU trade with the UK is far more important to them than it is to us. That's the bottom line !

No matey there was no cherry picking just negotiations and compromises.

Check out what the NFFO thinks about your hand picked cherries here. NFFO - National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations

Once again the results will not become clear until few years have lapsed. Let's all breath a sigh of relief common sense prevailed. Consequences, will become apparent soon enough...

Er, what happened to no deal then :)

If you really think we were able to cherry pick then you really haven’t read much about the detail of the deal.

Thinnest of Canada style deals might as well be No Deal.

Just proves that the EU couldn't let go and ended up giving us the One thing they never wanted. How many times did they state "no Canada style deal given the proximity of the UK to the EU".

In the mean time, we have and will continue to progress deals outside of previous EU arrangements.

What's not to like!

Everybody want's to do business with the UK.

LOL

There are many areas still unresolved.

Here is a link to the BBG summary points on the epic deal.

The deal is more about agreeing on a method of approach for dealing with the disagreements as and when they crop up rather than a full agreement which can be implemented on the many issues.

So many areas are simply a case of kicking the can down the road whilst trying to maintain free trade.

Its worked as the American financial debt policy for 50 years so I wouldnt worry too much about that!

Still a cost. Wasted time and effort. So the new deals, when they are made with the rest of the world (as perrrwomised), will need to be checked and addressed each and every time with the EU deal. That is to ensure it does not brake the agreement.

There are always going to be cost of doing business (transaction costs). It is way too soon to see any benefits accruing just yet. There is no victory. Just a lot of noise and new red tape to learn and create some more when required.

Objective of free trade or the common market was to do away with that by harmonising our processes and standards to cut out that cost.

As CV says, it's basically a challenge to our politicians to see how they can do better than the last 40 years. Ball is in the Brexiteers court to see how well they can hit it back. Retirement should be an interesting watch soon enough.

There IS a victory.
We regained control of our borders and many many more things.

We always had control. Just a matter of how it was exercised.

Social-Economics-n-Politics can't be disentangled. Only studied in relation to each other.

The whole shenanigans have become about soundbites. Take back control indeed if you choose to believe all that baloney.

As said before, likes of CV and perhaps you too can try and display it as winning and losing but the whole show is about a new arrangement and agreeing about how we interact commercially and politically with our EU counterparts. We no longer have any say about what goes on in the EU.

However, we still need to ensure any subsidies, trade deals and myriads of goods exported and imported are inline with EU rules about source of origin. Considering a car can have up to 3000 parts, that's a lot items to track. Our whole economies are based on value added to a good or service in the production process.

The mind boggles. 1000+ page document is damn good imo. However, I think that'll turn out just to be the contents to a much greater impending volume coming our way soon.

imo we have lost control and given to a bunch of Brexit yobs shouting and promising a lot without demonstrating any value.

Time will tell....

We're on our way back to being a world super power again! 😜
English as a preferred language across the world.
The pound to be the next reserve currency because the dollar wont be for much longer.

I used to work for Alcatel, which was a French telecommunications equipment manufacturer. All internal documents were required to be in English.

It's ok, I was just taking the p1ss out of the remoaners.

The real reason everyone has to use English is because it's the universal language used in legal and commercial law.
