Spyware Detector

I must say over the last 11 month and 2 weeks. It has found 188456 worms
Hi laptop1
that's somewhat frightening, (unless you collect them) If I were you I would take that to a computer help forum, such as www.geekstogo.com and ask in their malware section why they think you are collecting so many, maybe they can make some suggestions on your computer security. Given that the experts reckon that at best a single program of this type can detect about 80% of what's out there that would mean you could still have about 47,000 on your machine, nice.
The only thing with your quote rougetrader is, its from a SPYBOT search & destroy web site. they are going to knock competition. only believe an independent survey
Agree on the "independent" point, though you'd be somewhat naive to believe that you can be totally sure of the independence of any website. On the subject of spybot, they provide a free product, it serves little purpose to go around bashing the pay for community since they are not in competition, those who are of a mind to pay will pay someone. Anyone who's done any research into the spyware problem will know you need more than one program and thus are likely to supplement your paid product with a few free ones, if it were in their interests to 'dis' anyone it would be other freeware products.
I simply posted the link as it was what I came up with on a quick search, their points may or may not be valid.

On a more thorough search I found that Spyware Detector was on the Spywarewarrior site ( an 'independent' spyware site) as a dubious program but has been removed from that list since it no longer appears to have the problems which earned it that listing. Interestingly your independent website remains on the list of rogue / suspect anti-spyware sites.

I wasn't able to find any reviews by any of the mainstream pc sites, I think if I was going to pay money for a product of this type I would go with one of the well known ones such as Spyware Doctor or Spysweeper, but as I have said I personally think the detection rate is generally poor to be paying for it, and you can get good cover from a cross-section of free ones. Many like me are not techies, but pc security is one area we should make the effort, to that end here are a few sites that may help.

I got 2 week before I renew my subscription, but from what I am reading I cant see anything to changed my mind yet?
If you wanna pay for a product and this product is working well for you, I'd say go ahead. Then I'd seriously seek some help and advice on how to prevent all those infections, I really think that's way over the top.

If you want to pay, go ahead and waste your money. There are good free ones out there. Read this forum. You should not rely on one programme. I do not have any worms or viruses. If you have that many worms, you must be a keen angler. ;)

Since I had Spyware Detector nearly 12 months, it has found 188685 Threat Definitions. I think most of them are tracking cookies im not sure what a worm looks like lol.but I guess some must me mix up in there, what ever it picks up I just place in Quarantine, shows how much I know about PCs I only have a laptop for trading, I download very little. just the odd new updates trading platform so on...

. So do you guys think 188685 Threat Definitions over 12 months is to much???

Thanks for you help Rouge and oatman

It's a crazy amount. You can clean cookies with the free programmes.
CCleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

by the way, there's a new version (1.34.407) available. ;)

You'll prolly think this is a daft answer but I honestly think that if those are indeed worms, and not just cookies (a lot of these programs don't like cookies and may count those as they remove tham) then it is about 188,680 too many
If a lot of those (most) 'threat definitions' are cookies, then that's another matter, you pick them up all over the place, as oatman said a program such as Ccleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Will clean your browser cache and all the cookies away.

I wouldn't allow the other 5 either. ;)

So you think 188685 is to much even if most of them are cookies tracking and nearly all says Low threat. Very rare I get high threat ones. anyway.

I just downloaded CCleaner and click on Analyse and it come up with this 96,6MB to be removed. im not sure if that a lot or not? is my next step to run cleaner??

Thanks

I think most of them if not all are cookies. they must be lol.

Thanks

That is a lot of junk. You can save certain cookies if you go into Options, Cookies. How much is Temp files?

That's cool, if they are all cookies no worries, a lot of programs will count those to beef up the figures, show they are earning their keep. An alternate browser such as Firefox or Opera would also help with security, if you are not already using one of them. I have just started using IE7 on this PC so I am particularly security concious at the moment given IE's history, have just added Spywareblaster to the list I run

A lot of people find that when they run one of these programs for the first time,

Get SpywareGuard as well. They work together.
Yes I see that, tho I also note they describe it as a 'work in progress' and provide a link to FAQ's for help with problems, that always makes me nervous.

I run Spyware Detector everyday and today it picked up 1 and it said 1 worm found but all it was is a tracking cookie low threat. I need to buy a dummies guide on PCs lol.do you guys work or own a PCs shop you sure know a lot of stuff.

Thanks again. I will look it to some of the links you sent me...

No just a bod like yourself, don't know a huge amount, but read a lot on the security aspect, try to keep up to date

Try Spyware Doctor, I had all the free spyware programs and still used to pick up crappy stuff before i got this. This program has an On Guard facility where it just kicks out stuff as it trys to enter your machine. I was told that having too spyware programs on your machine slows it down quite a bit as they still quietly run in the background even though the makers say they dont. Whether this is true or not im not definately sure .....
