I think you are unlikely to find a free tool for Excel data recovery (unless you want to risk a warez site - let's not go there), but why not try a couple that offer a free demo. This will indicate if the file is corrupt beyond repair or recoverable, and if so how much of it. If it can recover the data, then typically you'll see the first few cells as they actually are, with the rest of the sheet blanked out, and if it's a small file you may just get lucky and see nearly all of it. Many thanks for your 2 links.

I have tried both and although they can find the files there is no data left in them.
I have tried several pieces of software and they all produce the same result.
I have reluctantly accepted that the data has gone and resolve to keep extra copies in future.
