IG Index While Staying in the US?

I have an account with IG Index but am probably going to the US for 3 months. Capital Spreads and Tradefair specifically state that you must not access from the US but IG does not (at the log in point).

What would happen if I try to trade from a US IP address? Would it be blocked or would they turn a blind eye?

No guesses, please - does anyone actually know?

It's going to hook right up and nobody will know or care.

That sounds like a guess. Most servers can block the IPs of any country they choose. For example, Betfair blocks US users and I can't access some areas from Malta.

I can't see a problem with connecting from overseas. If you do have an issue, then try the following:

1. Use a UK proxy
2. Use anonymizer to filter your IP address
3. Install 'log me in' or 'vnc' onto your PC in the UK before leaving, and log into the PC from abroad to trade

There are always way around these little inconveniences.

You should be fine. I've accessed their site from the US before, although things might have changed. All they're concerned about is that you're not a US resident - if you're only going for three months, you're just a visitor.

Thanks, that was what I was looking for!

'Ask them' is also a sensible reply but I think they may be obliged to say that it is illegal.

Splitlink has the best reply on here. Listen to him.

If they say its illegal, then dont do it. Simple.

Why give them an excuse to shut you out of a winning trade or worse still, take your profit away from you but if you happen to lose money, ignore it.

Hi there,

I often trade using Capital Spreads from the United States. I have NEVER had a problem, no one has contacted me regarding it and I NEVER have a problem logging on.

I often trade from the US for periods of up to 2-3 weeks and often 4-5 times a year and have done so for the past few years.

I have also used IG Index and ODL markets from the States as well neither with any problems.

I think issues arise if you are a Citizen of the USA and open a spread bet account.

Regarding the legality of it I am not 100% sure but unless you walk down to the local cop shop and tell them how would anyone know that the guy in the apartment block at La Cienega and 5th is connected to Capital Spreads and spreadbetting illegally.

Thanks, that's useful to know. I'm assuming the best thing is to just do it and not bother with opening another US friendly account.
