Advice please : Stockbroking for a career

be careful though - there are firms out there who will take anyone on as a broker but there is a good reason for this

a lot of the AIM brokers out there are just spank shops flogging the same cash shells again and again - one recently got closed down and another received a hefty fine as did one of their brokers - basically complete scum bags - I don't see there being a long term future for many people in this area

CFD brokers are not much different - often just white label providers for the bigger CFD brokers out there and basically churn their client's accounts and basically recruit from the same pool as the AIM spank shops

If your personal morals allow you to do this sort of work you might as well move to Spain - at least you'd avoid the daily commute and can enjoy a bit of sunshine.

good post lol

Sgolf,

May sound stupid, but look through the Yellow Pages under "Stockbrokers" and contact the names which are unfamiliar, ie the smaller brokers (may be an idea to visit their web sites first to see their angle).

Grant.

Hi Grant....u seem very knowledgable and I would really appreciate some advice...I have been offered a position as a trainee equity dealer at a Company called City Equites...it specialises in small cap...hve u heard of them and is it just a spank shop..I really dont want to get into a firm which will damage my career. I have a first class honours in Business and I also have all the relevant exams but the investment banks wont touch you without an internship so im trying another way in for some experience.

PLEASE HELP!

They are probably the NO.1 renowned regulated spankshop since Hoodless Brennan and Wills & Co just got closed down, along with a number of others such as Montegue Pitman. Working at an AIM brokerage like that will look **** on your CV, your much better off doing a middle office or back office job and a decent bank. Your right that internship's have seriously dried up and its tough at the moment, but just keep pushing for it and look at every option.

I wouldn't. Had several friends worked at City Equities and lets say they are not strictly blue chip. Many have had difficulty getting jobs after working there - if you lay with dogs you get fleas !

Actually, stockbroking is a pretty lucrative career if you just look at the returns it could generate. A successful stockbroker easily brings home six figure salary. However, there are many downsides as well to this profession. First, everyone who is a stockbroker can't earn fortunes. You need to possess special skills to acquire clients, convince them to invest their hard earned money and only then you can expect to make some money.

Although the career is challenging, the rewards far outweigh the risk. So, I would definitely suggest you to try stockbroking.
