Staying out is still a conscious a decision. Its what I do too (though I kept positions opened in previous days across the FOMC announcement this week - didn't make much overall difference after volatility settled that evening).

Then you're much braver than I am because I never keep any positions opening around FOMC announcements and the NFP. Sometimes they cause just a few whipsaws, sometimes there's a major movement which happens in a direction opposite of my positions. I don't want to take that chance.
