upgrading from win 98

Thanks for the tip – it sounds to me as if it should work.

I guess the essential bit is the step where you remove or delete the original OEM keys, the ones that you entered while you were doing the install? Unfortunately, I don’t know my way around the registry well enough to try it – but, it's certainly something to think about for the future?

Well, I DO rebuild frequently - I've bought 2 x Win XP Pro OEMs in the past ooooh 8 months or so, one copy is as per original the other on my main PC gets all sorts of hardware changes - every so often I phone Microsoft up (latest was Monday) and I re-authorise the Office XP and Win XP installations. Takes 5-10 mins, and whilst it's a pain I still bought each XP Pro full version for slightly under £100 apiece.
I can also support earlier notes - for heaven's sake DON'T upgrade a Windows version, it almost always comes to grief - buy a 'full' version and install on a wiped or new hard drive.
