IMO this is a similar scenario to how the MBS sh!t happened - you get a bunch of people who's incentives are misaligned with their alleged intentions. Only in this case, there is no-one that can readily hold them accountable.

There should be some system in place that allows the Public to enforce a general election.

That'll never work. I mean something in the constitution that says, if such and such a condition is triggered by the voting public (probably number of votes within a period of time... say the sum of votes in the past 6 months, and you can only vote once every 6 months) reaches a threshold, the G'ment are obliged to call a General Election.

Successive Govts have flipped flopped between Tories and Socialists. Take the last 50 years - I fail to see any improvement in most areas. 630+ MPs with the total money of the country and they don't seem to be able to improve anything !! Could the Liberals do any better ? If they can't then maybe we will just have to accept the inevitable string of scandals.

Most of them are just as disillusioned as the general public and are just filling their accounts with public money. The shiney ideals of public service and social conscience are back in the past. MPs are now professionals - in other words Americanised money grubbers. Greed - oh yes go for it, ya sleezy lot of self satisfied hypocrites.
