Trading Computer

Most servers have more than 1GB of Ram, to deal with data flow , IGB will be sufficent for your needs............

Good Luck

Nice thread..

I will be building my own trading machine soon. below are my thoughts so far.

P4 3.4 (3.6 are having over-heating problems)
1 MB Ram (not yet convinced that another MB of ram would matter)
Motherboard = Asus p4c800 e Deluxe
Gaphics card = Matrox QID (or two Radeon 9200 128mg)
Raid 1 Serial ATA 400GB
CD RW with DVD (fast) (don't need DVD burner)
Monitors (4) ViewSonic VP191b (19”)
Backups made online to @backup

Personally I'd go with the new amd 64 3500 or above (socket 939)....I've just finished my new system ( see above) I can not get it to run any hotter than 32'.. which compared with my P4 (2.6) is positively freezing.. ;) :cheesy: Which is great if your going to be like me & have the system running 24/7...?

As for the Ram ...I'd go for 2x 512mb ( DDR 400) like others have said 1gig should be fine, but if you need more? 4x 512mb (ddr 400) rather than 2x 1gig(ddr 400) is better for data flows...

As a tech challenged bod is what you've described the same as asking them for 1Gig of ram or does it have to be specified 2x 512

Most PC specialist normally advise 2x512mb=1gig ...but you can also get single strips of 1gig . These 1 gig strips can be a little troublesome as there recently new to the home market... There fine if your into overclocking & tweaking the voltage settings but generally most go with the2x 512mb (DRR 400).

My 2cnts worth

My trading machine is similar, 3.4Ghz, 2Gb RAM with 9600XT, 250GB SATA drive and LG DVD writer.

On the memory side 2 X 1Gb chips is ideal as it would leave room for expansion but also it is more expensive and far more prone to not working due to incompatibilities. If you go down that route buy the memory from www.crucial.com/uk and specify it based on the motherboard you are buying (also make sure and put it in the correct slots to get the dual channel benefits) that way if it does not work you can return it to them if it does not work. If you decide on caution not 4 X 512Mb RAM will be cheaper and work just as well. I have built about 15 similar spec machines recently for work and myself and using 1GB memory is definitely got the potential to cause you problems.

PS Go for a DVD writer, it will do CD's too and for an extra £20 it seems daft not to (in my opinion) Some of the latest LG ones are only around £42 from www.ebuyer.com.

If you are running XP then you will gain little or nothing above 512MB due to the way the OS allocates memory.

Applications have to be specifically written and few if any are able to make use of additioinal memory.

Can you supply any reputable articles that might back your claim, JonnyT? I sure do not want to buy more memory tha what I need to buy. However, I certainly will buy whatever I need to buy to max out my system.

Just to give an idea here's a screen shot with 6 or so esignal charts, Ib, mail , adobe photoshop t2w ect..
still less than 40% memory usage....

a320,
Is these with 2 x 512mb or more?

How does one take screen shots?

The shot is from this system....

I've just updated one of my systems & the spec is as follows.. :D )
AMD 64 - 3500 ( 939)
1024mb Ram ( 2 x 512mb DDR 400)
Asus A8V Deluxe ( 939)
Thermaltake Venus CPU cooler
250Gb Maxtor 150 SATA 7200 RPM/16mb cache
128mb ATI Radeon ( with DVI)
NEC ND-3500 DVD+/- 16xdvd/dvd-rw 4x/dual layer 4x
1.44 Nec floppy
Thermaltake ATX Case ( with temp display / side window/ 400 Watt PSU )
XP Pro
x2 Relisys 19" TFT TL966B

To take a screen shot I hold down the CTRL key then press the "Prtscr key" ( normally on the top line of the keyboard near F12) then paste it into adobe ( or any other paint application)

Thx a320,

Would you be so kind to open up as many resource demanding programs as you can (including streaming data such as ticker symbol quotes in real-time) and then give a screen shot of your CPU usage? Can you max it to around 90% if you try?

What do you guys think of the
Asus P4C800 E Deluxe motherboard ?

A screen shot of Esignal with 10+ charts..ect of the futures (not clearly shown their behind the front ones) stacked on top of each other..(esignal has been playing up today)
With FireFox , IB , Email, Adobe, Bloomberg media (video) & a DVD movie runing all at the same time . Still less then 20% cpu usage & 40% ram...( you can see it on the t2w task bar on the right hand screen)..

Hope this answers your question des?... ;)

Wow. Very interesting. Thanks for doing this for me. It helps build the argument that all one really needs is 2x512mb ram.

Hi a320, have you ever tried to push your system much over the 50% usage on RAM, my curiosity stems from a post someone made on another thread saying that windows cannot utilize much more than 512MB. I have found that pushing my system beyond this causes it to become unstable and some aplications freeze, new ones will not open etc, which seems to support the idea that it cannot make use of the extra RAM.

I have 2 gig RAM, and I like it.. okay I don't use it all of the time, but it does makes a different in the short bursts if you need it.

Hmmn the situation I am getting is that if I am right and monitoring the RAM usage correctly I am only using just over 500MB when opening another aplication will lock up my PC
