It was a long time ago, back in the days of Mao and his "little red book". Very difficult situation, riots etc.
Things have improved since then.

I worked for a Russian/Canadian import/export company. The Russians had fled to Shanghai after the 1917 revolution and then to HK after the Communist take over. Stateless - poor sods !

In a word, yes.

My wife and I managed to take 3 and a half months off 2 years ago. Got the train to Moscow, then the Trans-siberian railway to Beijing and spent the rest of the time travelling down through China and SE Asia. I saw and experienced things which put a completely new perspective on life and have many many happy memories.

It's not for everyone, but if it's something you want to do and you have the opportunity to do it, then grab the chance with both hands.
