So I was advised to start looking at NYSE members report. I have found out it is no longer generated in it's previous guise but nevertheless I have been looking at volume reports generally.

I saw that there were about 3bn share traded on NYSE on 18/12/09 where normal volume seems to be about 1-1.5bn shares per day.

Is this end of year activity normal or is it coincidence that the 21/12/09 marked the start of this trend on the S&P500 index?

If it is normal, what is the reason for it. Tax? End of year filing?

Maybe I should wait until the next time it happens then...........

You look like the kind of person that might know the answer DT given your other posts....

;-)

- The 18th december was quarterly expiration of stock-index options, futures and futures options.
- Christmas is obviously a low volume time, so presumably before traders have to do alot of management of trades due to their absence
- Traders/ (mostly investors) reformulating portfolios for 2010
- Approaching end of year/ end of month rebalancing of stock indices and money manager portfolios

Ta Gladiator - you're my hero.

BTW - 3bn seems a lot. Friday was heavy on 1.5bn with option expiration.

As for me being offended by thebinman's comment. Well. I don't have too much to say about that really apart from recognising he or she didn't know the answer either.

Hiding up your lack of knowledge regarding the answer with a mean comment ... Nice ...

I guess its safe to officially name you a douce bag now - Douche bag.

You are correct. My comment just before was mean. That was not nice to say.

My apologizes for that.

Kind regards,

thevinman
