Has anyone used ProRealTime for DOW day trading. I've trialled it on the 2 wks and found the package to be superb, I would like a second opinion before I make a purchase though.

Can't help on the Dow, but I've been using them for forex since Sept '04 and have never experienced a break in the live feed, so I am certainly happy with them.

Just started using them for Eurex - amazing software, with programable scanner and "easy languge " type testing etc it seems for €50 a month - ridiculus.
Puts CQG and Pronet, as well as e signal in the rip off league.

Yes, I've used it for Dow daytrading and had no problems at all with it. I completely agree with DaxTrader's comments above. I switched to it a few months ago on the recommendation of others here (after using eSignal before). It seems to be considerably better and of course a fraction of the price.

Have you experimented with the Proscreener function ?

There is a mention of a Prorealtime forum, but can't find a link to it and the manual is a little sparse.

I am looking at this software and it seems to have everything I want. I note the comments above but would be interested to hear more. In particular, I have the following questions:

- how good is the real time feed; is there a lag?
- it is browser based, which raises 2 issues:
- does a chart window ever get taken over when you click a link in another browser?
- are there ever resource issues when you have many browser windows open?

I guess I'll get some idea about the answers to these q's as I play around with the sw - but any comments would be welcome.

thanks,
ohlcv

No, I don't experiment with anything technical if I can possibly avoid it. I am a technophobe and ignoramus. It's all I can do to turn the PC on and make it work; honestly: I'm not exaggerating.

Sorry, am not aware of this at all. I noticed some "online video tutorials" and actually played through them all and learned quite a few things from them. Was trying to work out the "narrator's" nationality from his interesting English accent but failed. (My wife thought Polish or Hungarian, possibly, but she's Russian herself anyway.)

I was used to using eSignal (which was a real pain in the neck for someone like me) before I switched to ProRealTime, and obviously ProRealTime is much better, more reliable and easier to use. I believe (though I'm not knowledgeable enough to prove it, or even discuss it much) that it's also far more flexible and has better facilities, gadgets and toys available. I haven't noticed it pouring the coffee yet, but it's only a matter of time ...

I'd say it's excellent, I'm not aware of any lag at all. Will be interesting to see how other users answer this (and your other questions).

Sorry, don't understand this question. What does "taken over" mean? Am not aware of any problem, anyway. I habitually have several real-time price windows running and a few other browser windows at the same time without any difficulty. (Mind you I do have quite a powerful and pretty new computer, if that's relevant).

Not so far, for me, anyway. But won't this depend mostly on things like your quantity of available RAM rather than on anything intrinsic to ProRealTime?

Thanks Roberto for that quick reply.

My evaluation account doesn't seem to be real time, and (so) doesn't seem to offer intraday charts or time& & sales. I have some more questions relating to T&S, and would appreciate any comments.

- On QCharts I can add a filter to my T&S so that only trades bigger than a set threshold show up - can this be done on proRT.

- QCharts also lets me colour code my T&S so that trades at the bid are red and at the offer are blue - this helps me quickly see buying/selling - can proRT do something similar?

Well, that's no good at all, is it?!

Have they stopped doing the week's free trial, or something? Or has something just gone wrong somewhere?

(I can't believe they've stopped the week's free trial of the real-time version, because absolutely everyone I knew who tried it immediately signed up for 3 months, so I think it was a very successful marketing tool!).

Sorry, I simply don't know. I don't trade stocks at all; I use only the currencies and indices package - there's more than enough in there to keep me off the streets. Let's hope someone else answers your questions; I know there are quite a few ProRealTime users here. But obviously you need the streaming real-time version!

Agree this Roberto on memory issues, speed, as for windows getting taken over no pproblems - although occassionaly (can't remember what kind of link) if you click on a link it will come up with a box saying "do you want to navigate away from the PRT page, this will close the program blah blah.
So you just say no.

anyone have anything to add to this forum?

im looking for a new data supply. ive had a look at this and it seems ok - my main concern is the data supply.

is it fast & reliable compared to a brokers feed?

especially keen to hear from futures traders.

Charts

Try Proquote it's not free however I think it's the best around at present

you might want to PM "DaxTrader" - he uses ProRealTime as his main data source, I think.

Anyone use the scanner facility and have opinions on its reliability etc?

yes I use it

not great in the reliability stakes, on one of my programmes one of the conditions is looking for an ADX > than 30 - it always gives loads that are below 30 - don't understand why.

Still , better than nothing

 cheers daxtrader, I'll take a proper butchers over the weekend. Also, can you programme/choose your own set ups (ie your own choice of MA's etc)?

thanks

yes, totally, it is a good thing to use, cuts down on a lot of grunt work in stock picking

but takes some time to learn how to program it - I printed out the guide and studied it carefully, bit frustrating at times, but worth the effort

if you want tips on programming, try using some of the strategies on the home page and look at the code (assuming you can)

good luck :)

I've been using prorealtime for a while now and there are pros and cons...
I originally started with it for two reasons
(i) it can be run on Macs
(ii) IB had been having problems with data feed and i wanted an alternate feed.

Customer service is not great. Emails take days to get answered, if at all. Data feed seems reliable and charts look and function well.

There are several other aspects I should like to point out from my experience which they have still not addressed.

1. The proscreener (scanner) does not function with futures which renders this feature useless for me in the main. When I asked them why, the eventual answer was that they didn't think it was something their clients wanted!

This also applies to the 'top movers ' screener which has many candlestick patterns and variable timeframes. Again not for futures....

I expressed my disappointment about this and i was told they would code me some candlestick pattern indicators. I sent in my list but again no response. Not great for $500 a quarter.

2. They say it functions well on Mac. Well this is not strictly true. if you have Mac running on anything less than Tiger then you can't use Java 1.5 and things will continually freeze. Even if you do have Mac OS 10.4 there is a known issue with the new Java and Macs which Apple haven't sorted out. (too busy with their video pods perhaps) Hence any excessive demands on the app and the whole thing freezes. This is a bit alarming if you are trading live off the charts - especially in a slow market!

3. However if you get a PC or two (dirt cheap from Dell) then it works great and the backtesting tool is excellent for looking at strats and the continuous DAX data for ex. goes back many years.

4. I've been looking at Metastock recently and this is an excellent program for FX. If only I could link this up to IB?!

I only use the free EOD version and not specific for the dow. Mainly Dutch and US stock and indices (including dow) with occasional use of other markets. Shortly after I started using it (a year back or so) I had a few times bad data, but it has been a long time since I've seen that.

I do have some programming issue's though. It takes long to get a reply on mails if a reply is received at all. I've not found a forum yet with an active discussion about programming it. Simple issue's are easy to program though. The main issue's I have is that I'm unable to combine different issue's in one strategy and to create exit strategies based on indicator values at entry.
