Online poker

Many aspects of trading directly apply to playing poker.
1) Discipline
2) Patience
3) Taking risks
4) Ability to interpret information quickly
5) Ability to remember key information

Anybody has ever taken the game seriously and make a bit of money on the side or full-time? Would be nice to hear some stories.

I been playing poker nearly full-time for about a year and 1/2 now, (with a few breaks in between for work experiences). I would still love to get back in trading but it seems like a remote possibility now...unless I lie on my CV.

I have to admit to being a bit of a poker player in my spare time.

In terms of comparing poker to trading, I understand the theory behind why people would think they are similar, but I personally think that poker is much more about reading people than it is about playing the cards.

In trading, the best players are those that remain disciplined and stick to their plan. In poker, the best players are those that can read people and vary their plan so as not to become too transparent.

If I tried to apply my poker playing style to trading, I think that I would lose..................maybe I'm just rubbish at poker!

Its a big part but not as big as most think, especially at the levels below 3/6$ NL

Especially online there is more of an emphasis on the maths and the cards to develop an edge.

I'm learning both at the same time and I see a lot of similarities. I read High Probability Trading recently and the author drew the same conclusions too so I was pleased to see I wasn't seeing things.

I think I'm better at the poker but still to afraid to lose money!

Go to pokerforums.org i was very active there and helped alot of people out, there are alot of good people there and it should help you advance fast.

I've got a couple of Dan Harrington's books and I read various websites but not the one you mention so I'll go look at it - much appreciated.

Poker and trading are, IMHO, 2 sides of the same coin. There is a degree of psychology involved with both but a focus on expected value, probability and a good multi-factor model can drive you through both. I have several poker systems that I use on an objective basis and which work well.

I have not automated them into a bot yet and they are slow, not designed for high pace, heads-up / few player tables so I don't play as much as I would like as it gets repetitive to implement.

Pokernomics is a growing and respectable academic discipline and is very interesting. I look forward to spending more time on the game when I have it to spare.
