Must-have trading book...

Because by his own admission he's not a great communicator of his ideas and finds it difficult to exactly transmit just what it is that makes him see an opportunity. ( This is not unusual for gifted traders). It's also quoted as the reason that the majority of his seminar students don't achieve notably successful results in the markets. But I suspect that's just reverse PR.

However you shouldn't underestimate his ability to trade off of the ignorance of wannabe traders by selling them seminars and software that he churns out year in and year out. He's gifted at this also. He trades off his reputation. Who wouldn't?

Given the uncertainty of market returns it's good to have a fall back business that's synchronised with your mainstream interest.

Good luck to him.

I suppose I agree, but afew minutes earlier you posted

"Stop blabbing and get on with it. In the end there's nothing to talk about once you've started being serious about you're trading.

Just do it."

Yet this successful trader writes books, and charges people to listen to his "bull****".

I just can't seem to square this.

Then again, no doubt he's rich and I'm not!

He's a GOOD trader. He makes money out of suckers.

Consistently.

What's so difficult to grasp?

The difference is that he occasionally gives you value for money despite himself,if you're ready to accept it and work with it. That's a rare event, rather like a successful trader.

Weird huh?

It just seems that your suggesting the only discussion worth having is the one you charge for.

Though the contents of the "esoteric" thread washed straight over me, surely communication can be for pleasure / exchange of views aswell as profit?

PS - I see no problem with people writing books, spouting "BS" in seminars or posting esoteric messages on BB's.

It takes all sorts, eh?

Hi wobbles,
Have you a link to DBPhoenix E-book.
I have done a search of this site for info.
Hi Camelot
You can contact DBPhoenix through the message board on Trade2win.
Make sure that you set your profile to accept messages.

depends what you mean .

I find that most ' technical ' info can be gleaned from the net for free. ie) what indicators to use blah blah.

so books that actually go into this , I find a bit of a waste.

my top 3 would be :

- Marketwizards 1
- Marketwizards 2
- reminicense of a stock operator.

lots of great tips .

I have to say though that I have not looked at any new trading books recently , so I may be outdated.

Don't read what everyone reads and don't believe half of the rubbish that trading authors purvey. Most of them have reverted to being trading scribes because they have failed at trading.

This has been and continues to be a very well known situation and is not news. I agree though on another point made that it is good business practice to diversify income sources. There is a view that if you are a successful trader that you would never consider any other ways of making money and I have never understood this view.

Paul

I totally agree Paul and to that end, my wife and I have spent the last 9 months building up what is rapidly becoming a very successful Ebay based business.

Paul

depends what you call successful .

I don't think the likes of joe ritchie , paul tudor jones or randy mackay are going to have time for too many books.

but these are the very top , some where down the foodchain , then yes , they are probably quite a few traders who have something worth saying.

Joules: Just splendid. As one who owns a couple of companies and is a passionate trader, "NICE POST!"

The point of good trading is actually to WIN in the markets and making $ is a large / bonus by product.

there is a subtle but powerful difference between the 2 motives. people who don't understand this miss the whole point of trading and will not do well in the long run.

if you just want to make $ , why not open up an online porn site , far less risk and the reward is high .

how many top traders will do that ? none .

hi ramesh51 .im a huge dr elder fan ..and want to get steve nison .and now will look at tradeing in the zone . thanks m8 .regards sally

The books that have helped me a lot in evolving my investing / trading
approach are:-

1. Reminiscences – La Fevre (naturally! – try to read it every 2 years and
always seem to find a new insight which I didn’t spot before)
2. Secrets Of Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets – Weinstein
(Basic, but an excellent, sound system which has stood me in good stead).
3. Wall Street – The Other Las Vegas and How I Made $2mil – Nicolas Darvas
4. Methods of a Wall Street Master – Victor Sperandeo,
(especially on trend lines and his 1-2-3, double tops, assessing risk)
5. One-Way Formula – William Dunnigan (a masterpiece)
and finally
6. Price and Volume etc. E-book by DBPhoenix (delightfully written and
provides the missing link I’ve been looking for in my trading).

IMO "How I Made..." by Nicolas Darvas is the best book ever written about stock trading - and very funny to read, too.

Yes, this must be the single most important reason for not writing serious books full of very valuable information.

Conversely, it logically follows that it is perfectly alright to write silly books full of nonsense.

Darvas - please summarise for us

This Darvas guy must be really really good. Looking at only the last page of your last posts you have recommended him at least 14 times !

May I ask:
- do you trade his methods ?
- do you have anything to do with any organisation which promotes his material ?
- without giving a link to any site, what are the main benefits of following his advice
- what, briefly, are the main aspects of his style/methodology etc
