How on earth you Underground travellers manage, I don't know! I remember, as a kid, getting on the train during the rush hour, about 0800 and hanging on a strap--if there was one free. A day like this must be sheer misery.

In Barcelona the trains have air conditioning and we have fairly comfortable rides. The trips are, usually much shorter, of course, and the rush hours are, probably, over quicker. However, without that a/c a lot of people would flake out, I'm sure.

Yes remember them well. In my time they used to smoke too. Showing age here. At least until the King Cross fire blaze.

Also remember suspect parcels during the IRA era. All change, train taken out of service and everyone squeeze on to the one behind... Oh boy... :(

Was in barcalona last week, very impressed with the metro. Not the easiest map to understand though!

I find the trains very noisy when the brakes screech. Deafening when they pass through the stations but, once on them, the a/c is glory!

A pity about the graffiti on the seats. Some Spanish youngsters don't realise how lucky they are and do not value public services-
