Medium-term Stock Spread Betting Journal

Current Positions

Well surprisingly I didn't give much of last weeks big gains back which is great, only down -2% this week. Most positions rode the pullback quite well, apart from VOD which had to go, it was weak!

New Position

Good fundamentals, breaking from long base, just done a swing low.

DRX.L 454 target: 530 stop: 431

Does the amount you bet per point vary Leonard? As I'm only a novice I'm sticking to £1/point for now.

yes, as stock prices vary, I keep my equivalent exposure equal across all my positions. For a given position I set my equivalent exposure to (account size)/2, and have a maximum number of positions of 6, hence my maximum leverage is x3. So for example, take my latest new position DRX.L, it's opening price was 454, thus my equivalent exposure is:
account size £1350/2 = £675, hence bet size of 675/454 = £1.49/point.

Note, that my max leverage of x3 is on the high side, but I am happy with that for this account size. If my account was say £20k, I would use a max leverage of x2 probably, hence that would be a position equivalent exposure of (account size)/3.

You're wise to stick to £1/pt, at least for your first 100 trades I would say.

fyi, my top tips for swing/position stock trading:
1. Understand your market and your edge
2. Be Disciplined
3. Be Patient! wait for the signal to enter... don't enter because it's gone down a long way already... wait for the swing low/crossover/etc.. what ever your signal is.

So do you arrive at 1350 by multiplying 454 by 3 and rounding down to the nearest 50? If so, why do you round the number down?

£1350 is my actual account size at the time, my forumla is:

bet size = ((account size)/2)/(share price)

eg. ((1350)/2)/(454) = 1.49 (£/point)

Oh right. Is that account balance including your open 6 positions? I appreciate the tips.

it's also worth noting due to my relatively small account size some stocks with high prices mean my formula gives a size below the min bet size. Eg.my AGK.L bet for example. I only entered that because the risk:reward was very good, and so it has proven. In general with my current account size I like stocks with prices <1000.

Current Positions

Well another brilliant week, account +9% for the week. It's great to just let these winners run without much effort required at all, however I realize I will give some of these gains back as that's the way it goes, especially if the FTSE breaks down below its trading range, but i'm just letting them run at the moment and wait for the trailing stops to kick in...

Nice Journal. A little tip for IG index and hedging. I saw you shorted the FTSE100 a few times but were concerned about the £2 per point limit. You can use 'ISF' which is the FTSE100 tracker fund from Ishares. IG count this as a normal share and can therefore bet at £1 per point.

thanks, nice tip!
I don't hedge the FTSE as a normal part of my strategy, but i'll certainly bear that method in mind, Cheers!

Opened a FTSE Long bet on a bounce last night at 5898, with a tight stop. Not my usual thing, but I like to dabble to try and get an extra bit of cash!

It's too volatile for me at this stage in proceedings. Quickies on the FTSE & Dow are the only trades that I've taken a proper hit on since starting, so I keep away now and resist the temptation.

Open FTSE Position

I opened a short of the FSTE100 friday night at 5937 as the trend looked weak and the DOW had closed down on reasonable volume. Stop 5987.
