"How much can you rely on technical analysis alone?"
As always in life one doesn't really have to rely on guesswork too much, provided one is sufficiently flexible and open minded to let facts speak for themselves without trying to subjugate them to one's personal opinion all can become rather clear and rather rapidly at that.
"High Frequency Trading
The drastically reduced cost of electronic trading has made a huge variety of new and different trading strategies feasible. Led by Jim Simons' Medallion Fund, the high frequency hedge fund category is now the most profitable on Wall Street. One industry watcher predicts this type of trading will reach 50% of total stock exchange volume by 2010.
In high frequency trading, you analyse trends in tick-by-tick data and make buy / sell decisions out of it."
Richard Olsen - founder of Oanda - has written a book on the subject.
Goldman Sachs recently had their high frequency code nicked by a guy who was moving on to a job at a firm started by peeps who had previously been employed by Ken Griffins hedge fund Citadel, a pioneer in the field of mechanical and subsequently high frequency trading strategies.
"In fact, high frequency trading has boomed in recent years, to reportedly account for an estimated 70 per cent of average daily trading volume. The technology essentially involves automated tick-by-tick, high turnover buying and selling, which relies heavily on the speed and sophistication of the network and computer systems involved. These are lightning fast and voluminous trades to take advantage of minute and fleeting changes in prices. Speed is obviously essential — as is beating the competition to an arbitrage opportunity." http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2009/07/08/60761/the-cold-war-in-high-frequency-trading/
Fundamentals ?
Havent read the thread, but per the above it's pretty obvious that Funnymentals don't need to have anything to do with trading and indeed cannot when trading ultra short time frames as with high frequency trading, but can come in pretty useful when trying to concoct up convincing stories to pull the wool over customers you're trying to sell a Potemkin village to.
