Good films

Thanks for the recco temptrader & FW. Always glad to see fellow enthusiasts of Studio Ghibli. I liked Princess M a lot. I thought Howl's Moving Castle was a bit lame in comparison, it seemed lightweight and rushed with far less intricacy. If you've not watched Pom Poko that's pretty good too, about a bunch of racoon-esque creatures, for some reason sporting prominent balls :), who are threatened by nasty developers.

Am eagerly awaiting his new one called Ponyo on a Cliff, out in 2008.

You're right about the amazing level of detail - it's wasted on anything but a big screen; I mangaged to procure a decent projector off eBay which is a reasonable compromise.

I'll keep my eyes open for Housekeeping - sounds interesting.

scarface (al pacino version), carlito's way, manhunter, badlands, against all odds, the fabulous baker boys, godfather I and II, probably many more...

Seen any good films lately? Care to share? Its thrillers for me, this one stood out that i watched last week, Memento.
Most aren't thrillers, but I'd go for:

Almost any Mike Leigh film -- Nuts in May, Naked, Career Girls, Secrets & Lies, High Hopes, Bleak Moments...

Almost any Stephen Poliakoff film/play -- Hidden City, Caught on a Train, She's Been Away...

Almost any Harold Pinter -- Betrayal, The Birthday Party...

Almost any Steven Berkoff -- Decadence, Kvetch, Harry's Christmas, Metamorphosis...

Koyaanisqaatsi
O Lucky Man
Made in Britain
Withnail & I
Scum
Spinal Tap
The first three Alien films
Taxi Driver
Blue Velvet
Midnight Express
The Fistful of Dollars films

And an anti-choice - IMHO the most over-rated film I've ever seen, The Shawshank Redemption. Bland, shallow, sentimental and safe. Typical modern American fodder.

On golden pond. - on last night again (im a bit like that old git only younger) great film.

American psycho - (first one) "I just want to fit in" :) lol

Heat - deniro, Pacino, val kilmer etc. wow that shoot out scene, scary.. I like....
"be prepared to walk away in 10 seconds" (handy for trading only less time?)

Gladiator - "on my command unlesh hell"

Silence of the lambs- "Not any more" Master hopkins referring to bad mannered cell neighbour Migs after he psyched him to top himself. worth £2 mill just for that line . Nice use of the C word..... seems a popular choice for filmakers these days...

Matrix- "You continue to disappoint me Mr Anderson" check out Agents smiths mannerisms in that scene...... ****ing awesome....... really kicks ****, well done Harvey.

Equilibrium - Christian Bale again... hes alright..Sean bean wings it too, "whats the point of life? - To Feel."ohh and "I lay my dreams beneath your feet, so tread softly, for your walk on my dreams" lol something like that, soz if the quotes off to the purists......

hoo ha, lest not forget Scarface.... ok so he may have legs as short as a forkin hamster, but Pacino did give us the liner "Say ello to my little friend... "

1984 , hmmm nice fuzz "titter" lets face it women these days have less hair than kojack :)

Debbie does dallas. "debbie" Mr hardwick, debbie, MR HARDWICK" etc etc..... ok that was the porn flick i was brought up on...... teaches you all the vital skills... women were women then too... now they shave more than men, have more tatoo's and keep the steel industry afloat with those ohh so attractive face/body piercings . And another thing, your thongs look silly sticking out ya trousers...... lol ...

good health all.....

Reactions: BSD
Watched Mr & Mrs Smith on C4 last night, starring Brad & Angelina - thought it was pretty entertaining.

Venus. Peter O'Toole is quite brilliant with fine support from Leslie Phillips and Vanessa Redgrave.

scanner darkly

Watched this recently, different, not for me though, good if you smoke drugs i think....

Swedish Teenage Lesbian Vampire Nyphomaniacs,
I found the subtitles got in the way.

For me:

Citizen Kane (there's a reason critics often nominate it as the best film ever made...)
La Regle du Jeu
Battleship Potemkin (classic silent film)
L'Avventura,
Vertigo,
8 ½
Tokyo Story
Bicycle Thieves
Greed (silent film)
Passion of Joan of Arc (silent film)

Less highbrow: Withnail and I always makes me laugh. Star Wars was the first film I saw at a big cinema (I remember the family going up to the Leicester Square and queuing for hours to get in) and as a young kid it blew me away - still fond of it for that reason.

Never did quite get the Adam Sandler phenomenon b4, but watched Happy Gilmore for 1st time last night on C4, and thought it was superb. Very good for anyone who's ever played golf!
