Cigars...your favourite one..?

eh hem.... just thinking and never did get it ...

Er, I have only had hamlet cigars about 15 years back , now then , with cigars for when or if I do smokes another one, how much smoke are you supposed to draw in? or not ? If anyones had a cigarette then they draw in close to 100% probably but with cigars..... ? what % I remember sub 50 % was still rough going or is it more of a quaff thing going on like wine tasting.. the experience of a cigar is to remain in the mouth, nose regions and not lungs ?

Curious..... cheers....

When on occasion I'm asked by groups of aspiring writers what they should do to get on, my advice is always, emphatically, smoke. Smoke often and smoke with gusto. It's a little known, indeed little researched, fact of literature and journalism that no non smoker is worth reading. And writers who give up become crashing bores."
AA Gill, Sunday Times, July 1999

"I NEITHER coughed nor felt sick. Instead, a sensation of wellbeing filled me, and I became slightly wired, not the reaction you get from alcohol, but sharper and calmer."
BBC reporter John Simpson, experiencing a cigar for the first time, Sunday Telegraph, July 1999

"There is nothing more agreeable than having a place where one can throw on the floor as many cigar butts as one pleases without the subconscious fear of a maid who is waiting like a sentinel to place an ashtray where the ashes are going to fall."
Fidel Castro

"The only way to break a bad habit was to replace it with a better habit."
Jack Nicholson, explaining why he switched from cigarettes to cigars.

"The Christians met on the way many people who were going to their towns, women and men, with a firebrand in the hand, and certain weeds whose smoke they inhale which are dry weeds stuffed into a certain dry leaf in the form of a muset made of paper, like the ones the children make on the day of the Holy Ghost; and burning a part of it, from the other part they suck or absorb or admit the smoke with breathing."
Christopher Columbus, from his Navigation diary

"The cigar smoker, like the perfect lover or bagpipe player, is a calm man, slow and sure of his wind".
Marc Alyn

"A good Cuban cigar closes the doors to the vulgarities of the world".
Franz Liszt

"The cigar must match the shape of the smoker. Round-faced people should avoid long, thin cigars and vice-versa".
Kees Van Dongen

"A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke".
Kipling

"A Havana Cigar is to the art of smoking what a great wine is to the art of drinking".
Alan Senderens

"Given the choice between a woman and a cigar, I will always choose the cigar".
Groucho Marx

"A good Havana is one of the best pleasures I know".
Somerset Maugham

"Heaven is a large Havana cigar with black coffee for breakfast".
Rev Thaddeus Birchard

"The most futile and disastrous day seems well spent when it is reviewed through the blue, fragrant smoke of a Havana Cigar".
Evelyn Waugh

"Tobacco is the plant that converts thoughts into dreams".
Victor Hugo

"If smoking cigars is not permitted in heaven, I won't go".
Mark Twain

"There's something about smoking a cigar that feels like a celebration. It's like a fine wine. There's a quality, a workmanship, a passion that goes into the smoking of a fine cigar".
Demi Moore

"Asthma doesn't seem to bother me any more unless I'm around cigars or dogs. The thing that would bother me most would be a dog smoking a cigar".
Steve Allen

The most famous cigar quote comes from King Edward VII of England. During the reign of Queen Victoria, smoking was frowned upon and not allowed at court. That changed when Edward VII came to the throne at the beginning of the 20th Century, and after dinner pronounced, "Gentlemen, you may smoke".

Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965) British Prime Minister. Said during a lunch with the Arab leader Ibn Saud, when he heard that the king's religion forbade smoking and alcohol. The Second World War, 1948-54.
"I must point out that my rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after, and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them".

Which is your favourite Cuban cigar...and why....

I would like to find out which Cuban cigar is the most popular choice generally.....

I like Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2 because of fruity smooth taste.......

Sometimes Montecristo No 5 because of spicy taste great smoke....
At last... a (non finance) topic I know about!

Up until about a year ago I was smoking lots of Ramon Allones, Specially Selected due to their distinct paprika and peanut flavour. However the latest batch from Cuba has been quite bland so I've avoided them. In my local cigar retailer they have a 'trocadore' who is rolling great coronas which I'm currently enjoying. Otherwise it really depends on my mood and other externalities.

If it's the early afternoon I quite like an El Rey Del Mundo, Choix Supreme. Great if you want something light, creamy and smooth on the palate.

For a general everyday smoke I would agree with the Epi 2 or a Monte 2, 4 or 5 since they balance the need for a fuller flavour and rounder mouthfeel. They are fantastic with about 5 years of age on them! Try to get one from the middle of a cabinet of 50. (I have a few boxes sleeping in a keep in Dunhill).

After a good meal I quite like something more full bodied such as a Partagas D4 or the recently re-released Bolivar Gold Medal. (Beware of the latter... it has an extremely powerful start which smacks you in the face like a 20 tick move in a market which trades in a daily range of 5 ticks), however, it mellows out after about an inch or so.

Great to meet another cigar smoker!

Zambuck - you're obviously a real fan: you ought to have a look at Cigar Afficionado magazine. Also online, although I think you have to pay for the decent content (ie reviews).

Just spent too much time hanging around in Dunhill (when you could smoke there!)

That's not a bad thing... provided that your friends can appreciate it. I often hear of stories of friends who will choose a Cohiba Double Corona and smoke an inch of it while throwing the rest away before telling you about the Hamlet they once owned.

I recommend this book, it's the industry bible. Encyclopaedia of Post Revolution Havana Cigars - REVISED EDITION

Is that the 'Cigar Spa' Cigar Spa electronic humidifier
Great stuff.....thanks for list I must look up now....
I see that you're listed as being in the UK. Are you in London? If so try to visit Casa Del Habano at 100 Wardour Street, W1 for some of the trocadore's cigars. They still allow 'sampling' inside so you can go in and try one.

My brother in law is a cigar enthusiast and it was via him that I eventually got into the cigars.....

I agree with you that if one is not used to cigars then they will after a few puffs just throw the cigars away....But not with me as I point out that each puff will cost 50 pence at least....But anyway most of these guys know a little if not too much so no one will thorow it away after few puffs......No cigars and no beers if anyone does that...!!

Thanks for the Book list....I see that only 5000 are going to be printed so a must buy for me...!!

No the automatic humidifier is not the one you mention...though I know about it.....Mine is a bit cheapo model bought so that it will fit in with my existing humidor box as well as new one if required.....It is the one listed below.....For time being it does the job......

LV electronic Humidifier - Humidor Discount: No 1 for cigar humidors

....Thanks I will certainly look this up...The book mentioned by RichieE is also great source of information and probably the last word in cigars and costing at £49.99 it must be the ultimate in details and information.....

There is supposed to be a new edition coming out this year. However, I don't have confirmation of a date. It's a massive book though, all the cigars seem to be printed lifesized!

I actually thought that it would be the Cigar Oasis Electronic Cigar Humidifiers Cigar Humidor Humidification. This is something I've been pondering for a while but I haven't met anyone with one in the UK. It can run off the mains via a 'ribbon cable' connector so you can leave it alone to maintain itself.

Oh yes, I know Shervingtons. A friend of mine informed me that the staff have all been given their redundancy notices and the shop has been sold! Do you know whether this is true?

....hmmm....I was there last week and it did not appear to be in depletion mode, but then this could be true........

.....It is one of the oldest shop in that area with staff who know what they are talking about, so it would be great disappointment if it were to close......

Fox's on St James's Street is well worth visiting too - like something out of a Dickens novel.

Hoyos epicure no 5 are the right length....So are others which I must stock up.....

I get Jose Piedra cazadores (Cuban) from Spain at just over a€1 each- highly variable, but so far Siglo vi/ robusta would be my favourites. I also don't mind most 12 year olds, though it's often worth paying a premium for 18-25 year olds ( single malts obviously, and Talisker tops that 12 yr old list)
