Anyway, during the height of Ukrainian crisis and sanctions against Russia it was a perfect time to short ruble, had a very good time trading USD/RUB. Sometimes it was $400-500 on daily swings for 2 weeks.:whistling

Agree. However cynical this may sound, market loves wars and crises.

I really can't see why Russia is so keen on expansion. They are huge and only sparsely populated. Putin admires Catherine and Peter who both had expansionist policies. Their adventure into Afghanistan should have taught them something.

Well, perhaps it's not admiration with the past, but rather common greed and megalomania? You know that in Russian schools when they start study geography they measure their country's size by how many other countries would fit in it? Like 4 Frances, 2 Indias, etc.? They nurture this type of totalitarian thinking right from childhood. 😕
