Hi,

I know there are heaps of threads discussing the optiver trader test. But I had a specific question which I couldnt find the answer to. Im looking to apply to optiver and a few similar firms and have been practicing for the test at tradertest.org.

Could someone please tell me roughly what level from tradertest.org the optiver test is set at from what Ive seen on forums its around the easy level perhaps slightly harder but not as hard as the medium level? would that be about right?

Also I wanted to ask people what they think makes a good trader. For example the fact that I need to practice for this test mean I am not likely to be any good? Should you be exceptionally smart? I hear that there is a high dropout rate what would be the reason for this?

Could people please suggest possible firms to look at Im in Sydney and I was looking at applying to:
Optiver, Tibra, eclipse options, SIG, IMC are there any others that I should look at?

thanks heaps

Mark

Hi Mark,
Even I have same question as of yours. In terms of questions pattern of the numerical tests. I am practicing from traderstest.org. Do share your secret of practices too. I have examination on 5th April 2012.

Best of Lucks

Amar

Hi Amar,
I have been going through the exercises in the book 'How to calculate quickly' and basically practicing on tradertest.org I can do the easy test generally without any problems but struggle on the medium test.

I still dont think I am up to the speed for optiver so I haven't applied there yet. I've got a test with IMC though coming up soon, I'm hoping they are a little easier than optiver but we will see.

Let me know how you go on your test. And if you have any pointers such as how difficult it is compared to tradertest.org and the range of multiple choice options etc.

Best of luck!!!

hi mark

imc are really hard to get into... this time last yr they hired zero grads, thats right zero, coz they said none of the applicants were good enough.

there's generally a failure rate of ~80-90% in trading firms' math tests not becoz people don't have talent but becoz they don't practice

try applying for Virtu

btw do u know if imc r still reviewing applications.. my friend applied there a few weeks ago and hasnt heard anything from them. do they bother to send out rejection emails?

also do u know if sig hire grads in aus?

all the best

Hey kayliebath,

Yeah I heard the story about imc and yeah I didn't make it through to the next stage... I don't know if it was a combination of average test score and I didnt do so well in the interview. But it sounded like they have finished reviewing applicants.

I was thinking about applying to virtu but they're moving offices to Singapore and that wouldn't really be my first choice. Do u know what they are like to work for it seemed (from reading reviews) that they're not the best.

I was also wondering about sig as they would definitely be one of my first choices, or maybe liquid capital.i haven't seen any signs that they are looking though, does anyone know if they hire grads and of so around when do they look?

I guess my biggest question that I would really like someone to answer is if anyone know what the failure rate is for a trader once they have been hired? And what are the main reasons for failing are? I am particularly asking people that have or are currently working for these trading firms

Ohhh and Amar how did u go in your optiver test?

Cheers

Mark

hi mark

from what i've found on forums virtu has really long hours - over 12 hour days (like IB). but ive heard that the interview process is primarily brainteaser based - super hard ones and from looking at linkedin profiles most people there are super geniuses - like chess champions, maths olympiad,... plus their traders aren't actually market makers i think

i know that liquid capital do hire grads every yr... typically around end of yr. for this yr's intake they opened and closed applications in january. they also apparently have super long working hrs

from what ive heard the primary reason why people get let go once theyve been hired is that they dont make enough money on the simulator. before you get to trade with live capital you have to pass all the theory tests and do well on the simulator. but very few actually fail.

btw which firms have u applied for so far? i know that optiver apps are still open at least for the wholesale trader position. also optiver isn't harder to get into compared to the other firms. u applied for eclipse?

cheers

At the moment I've only applied to imc and a few ibs. But I would prefer to land a job as a trader. From speaking to optiver and eclipse once you've been selected they get u up and running a lot sooner so I was going to try applying for them when I'm closer to graduating.

Are u applying at the moment? If so with who and how have u gone?

Cheers

Mark

Most market makers such as optiver, tibra, imc, eclipse, liquid, etc have 2- or 3-month long training programs and allow you to trade live after that time...

Plus I know that optiver hires penultimate year students, so you can start later if you want... and they only recruit once a yr so its probably a good idea to apply to them now. plus they hire both screen and wholesale traders

ive applied for optiver and eclipse. got testing coming up for optiver and no response as yet from eclipse

cheers

Does optiver really on hire once a year I thought it was at least twice... In any case I would prefer to apply now and secure a position for next year but I dont think Im up to speed to pass their tests so I'll probably have to wait till next year.

Can you let me know how u go in your tests and interviews I would like to get a better feel for the questions and how they compare with something like tradertest.org

cheers

Mark

For the screen trader test the cutoff is around 55/80 but for the wholesale trader test the cutoff is around 10 points lower. (there's negative marking for both) so maybe try applying for wholesale trader position this yr, and if u dont get it try applying for screen trader next yr

yeh apps are only open once a yr and thats for both midyr and beginning-of-yr intakes

Sorry all for not replying to the post.

For Some Personal reason I couldn't attend the examinations in April. So my test are rescheduled on 30th May . For your information I came across the people who took the test ,they literally confirm that nothing matches with practice exercises of Traders Test.

Please Suggest me something.I am now tensed for test.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to ask what the scene for lateral hires at Optiver-Amsterdam for trading positions. They do declare that they have vacancy for Trader positions throughout the year. Is that true.

Plus are they or any other Amsterdam trading houses willing to interview candidates
who dont already have a work permit.

Also, I wanted to ask whether you need a referal from an employee for an interview, or applying on their site is good enough?

Sorry for the nuclear bomb of questions, but would really be glad for the answers.

Thanks again

Pranjal

Hello all,
I am a student here in the United States about to take the Optiver online test, any advice? I have been practicing from trader-test, is it anywhere close to this?

Hey Mark,

I also practiced at tradertest.org, but you should also try calculationrankings.com. There are tests and you can also practice calculations with a stopwatch, very usefull!!! The tests there are quite similar to the test I did at Flow Traders, however I don't know the level at Optiver! :)

can someone please respond to the original OP.

This thread has been derailed on mulitple occasions...what is the LEVEL equivalent to traderstest.org

Also, if it is not similar - can you give example questions?

Thank you
