I just bought my Dad an Archos Media Player. It's 40gb and will play all kinds of movies, tv shows, music, photographs or can be used as a hard drive. It has wireless capabilities and can be used to surf the internet. You can also plug it in to your TV and record TV Shows.
Anyways, I bought one for myself and thought it was a fantastic bit of kit, hence I bought my dad one.
IT far outstrips the capabilities of an IPOD IMO. I would highly recommend one.
