So, I'm looking for a laptop to buy, I need it to be moderately powerful, and look good.

This is my desired spec range:

1.66-1.82Ghz Intel Core Duo Processor
512mb-1GB RAM
80GB-100GB Hard Drive
128mb+ Graphics
DVD/CD Optical Drive
15" Screen size
2.5hr+ Battery life
Under 3kg

My Budget is £650

I will be using it for Trading

Have you bought a laptop recently for a similar price, would you recommend it?

Anyone own an Fujitsu,Dell inspiron,Averatec laptop? What's the performance been like?

Laptop recommmendations/reviews.....

Very happy with my Acer Travelmate - my one (2356XM - cost £399 from Staples about six months ago) is not specced as highly as the one you're after but have been very pleased (despite lower spec seems to be faster and more stable than my higher spec but older desktop), and others in their Travelmate range have the features you're after at the right sort of price. Nice looking too IMO.

See here for specs and prices: http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/wr-resource/1158674980/upload/E0Entity0/1/Notebooks_UK.pdf

nice one mate =)

Have you tried

www.dabs.com

I got my HP laptop from there. It cost £550 two years ago.
512MB RAM, 30GB Hard Drive, 3.0Ghz Celeron processor.

I'm sure they have better spec models now for the same price. :D

I also have an Acer Laptop which I bought about 10 months ago and it has been pretty good, it is a bit bulky, but that is because I went for the faster processor (It was a lot more money to get the light weight machine with a fast processor). It cost £499, but has been very reliable.

The best laptop I owned was a Sony Vaio, but it was very high spec and had the largest screen available on a laptop - It also cost £1700.

Dell make decent enough laptops, but when I tried to order one there was quite a long wait for delivery.

A company I worked for use to only have Compaq and IBM computers and we use to get quite a few DOA with them, one batch we had to send 50% back with faulty video cards.

I just bought a Dell Inspirion 6000 from their 'Outlet' section on their website for a total of £586 (with a free delivery and a £50 off offer). It's not got Duo, but does have 1.73Ghz Pentium M, 1Gb RAM, 60Gb HDD, 128Mb graphics card (most at this price have integrated graphics, i.e. they use system RAM not their own), DVD Writer, 15.4" WSVGA+ (1680x1050 res!), 3-4hrs battery and is ~3kg. The res is fantastic for showing charts, you should bear that in mind over a 1280x1024 res...I've just taken a photo of it running to give you an idea...also I only had to wait a week for delivery.

If within your budget go for a 15.4" widescreen, very nice to look at. FWIW I have an 18 month old Acer Travelmate 4501 WLMi, generally very happy with it. Dell build quality and service is v.good IMO, although maybe less bang for your buck once you up the spec.

Hi JasonC2,

I've just gone through the same head scratching.

In the end I went for an Acer 5612wlmi from www.laptopsdirect.co.uk which I purchased last week.

Its got that Duo thingey, 1gb of memstuff, 80gb of hardstuff , dual dvd rw e.t.c, wireless, and a good 15.4in screeenand so matches your spec exactly.

With delivery and visa surcharge it came out at £692.

I paid only for 4 day delivery, but it arrived 48 hours after ordering.

It also comes with a free Vodafone 3G card with £20 credit - which I need - and was the deal clincher for me - the equivalent Dell was about the same price and I've always used them before.

First impressions :- It's working great, all software loaded easily (AOL easier than on Dell for some reason) - but it is quite heavy (especially when also carrying power cable), but that doesn't bother me.

If you need to carry it around then go for a Sony, but add 50% more to the price for an equiv spec,

Hope that helps.
