Can anyone share some advice on trading the FTSE stocks? I'm particularly interested in the
open. What time the main market participants come in etc.

Right from the 0800 gun (and there will have already been the pre-market auction not open to the likes of us ). The opening bid/offer spread is usually pretty wide 'til things settle down after some minutes and they begin to trade at "normal" spread.
