Hi guys,

Im trading on a Dell Vostro 1000 with windoesn XP pro. The properties are:
- 1.9 Ghz
- 2 Gb RAM
- Dualcore processor TK57
- AMD Athlon

I was wondering whether my laptop is enough for daytrading, or do I have to use better and faster devices?

Thanks

Mozy

Should be alright as long as:

- you keep it free from bloat (i.e. don't run internet explorer or outlook - which means you can run without a virus scanner as long as you dont open any progs or office docs from the net or email - use Firefox to browse (or Opera or Chrome) and Thunderbird or any webmail to read email))

- you regularly defrag

- you have a good internet connection

What is a good internet connection?

Mine is 4 mb/sec, is that enough?

tnx

I would run a speed test to see what the download / upload speed is. What you will find is the actual broadband dwonload/upload speed is different and lower from what is advertised.
The BBMAX online broadband speed test is a good one.

I'm trading (well, spread-betting), on a Toshiba laptop running XP Pro with probably a bit less memory than yours and maybe even a bit less CPU power. It is Intel though.
(depends partly on your trading style of course. Probably no good for scalping).

I guess you are really talking about CPU & Memory, but you might consider adding a decent screen, which should be able to be done easily and relatively cheaply. Keyboard (USB) too, if you are fed up with the laptop keyboard. And I assume you are using a mouse, not depending on the cr@ppy touchpad? I can recommend the Logitech Nano thingie....really small and neat and effective and only about £35.

I probably need more memory and CPU power, to be honest, but I get by.

I don't really have the workspace for the moment for many screens, but ideally now I would have a couple more.

Yes, I've done that, I have 4000 kb/sec download and 1000 kb/sec upload.

I hope that is enough :)

Mozy, what is your trading style?
Trade the longer term and you can easily phone your broker to place the order.
High speed scalping and then things change.
I still trade off my 4 yr old laptop.

Don't believe all that cr@p about needing the latest and greatest hype. Trading is in your ability to read the market, not how fast or flash your pc is.

I trade the ES. 4-5 trades daily. I dont really think my laptop is slow. I use ninja with zenfire and everything goes alright. I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for helping
