Hi all,

I'm looking for some software that will enable myself to programme some basic trading strategies with relative ease and then back test these strategies for historical performance.

Note that all instruments are US equities.

If you are using End-of-day data, then I think Ninjatrader can do what you want for free (using yahoo data). MetaTrader also may be free using cfd's as a proxy for the underlying equities (so you can backtest intra-day) but the platform is very basic. Other software is available but it comes at a price, either for the software or the data or both.

If you are trading equities, then check out AmiBroker - seems to have a good reputation and can backtest on portfolios of stocks for a one off fee (most software is priced on a month-by-month basis) depending on your data source.

Also try searching in the software review section of the site, you should find all the usual suspects.

Ninjatrader is a good start. Make sure you read reviews before you buy caus there is some bad software out there...
