Hi All

I am a recent physics graduate from Durham uni (msci 2:2) and am really enthused by the idea of proprietary trading. Have had a look round these forums and notice that taking SII exams can be a good way of improving ones CV and learning a bit more about the area. I have worked in financial services (HSBC) in retail branches before and have spent a while playing fantasy shares/learning a bit about how shares/derivatives/commodities tick so am reasonably clued up on the basics. Which courses (if any!) would anyone recommend to take? I would say the futures market currently interests me the most at the moment. I am currently between jobs and will only be working part time as of December so finding the time to study shouldn't be a drastic issue. Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Don't do SII, I did and It didn't make me any more attractive to most firms but cost a large amount of time and money to do. Just look into smaller firms or try and get some trade support experience in my opinion.

Also a word of warning, watch our for trading jobs advertised through REED and other sights that are from a man named Len Stokes. He also more recently seems to operate through a company called Watson James Recruitment, offering what look like dream trading jobs.

This is a scam, the jobs advertise don't exist, often neither do the companies. I know of three graduates similar to yourself who were taken for £8,000 each by this guy, just a word of warning, this is his site;

You can see more information on peoples experiences here;
