Can anyone recommend a decent point & figure charting software program that you can buy outright and then put in your own data? And that will work on an old mac.

Thanks anyway for replying. I haven’t heard of Sierra. I use the stockcharts.com P&F charts all the time, but is only US stocks etc and I want to be able to do UK stocks as well. Maybe I’ll have to try and work out how to build my own P&F charts in Excel. Anyone an Excel genius?

As the replies to this have been thin on the ground. I’ve bought a P&F charting book instead and have managed to find a guy who’d created a basic P&F chart in Excel for free, which I downloaded and will try to make it better if I can. I did find a stand alone point and figure application called Bulls Eye Broker, but it only works on Windows unfortunately.

How you finding it?

The book hasn’t arrived yet, but it has a free online training tool on the authors site, which I’m finding it really interesting. Am starting to understand the main patterns better and their uses and am just up to a section on how to work out the price targets for breakouts.

P&F charting is definitely going to be something I use more of as it seems especially useful for longer term moves as it filters the noise so well.

How about running Parallels Desktop on your Mac and then getting tradestation ?

It's free if you do 10 roundturns / month, plus you have endless data, and it's a great platform.

Unfortunately I have non-intel Mac and running Tiger 10.4, so Parallels won’t work for me. Think I’m going to have to get a cheap PC maybe.

That's what I did, got tired of all the trading things not running on Macs, so I ahve a PC for trading now and a Mac for the rest.

Thanks BSD, I think it might be the only option. I suppose I could set up the PC purely for trading only with nothing else on it.

Yup that's how I did it.

And as I have nothing but tradestation running on the PC you do't get a lot of the PC problems.

So, win / win.

Good luck, lots of good / cheapish deals around at the moment.

I'm currently running TradeGuider using Parallels on Snow Leopard. Runs pretty well, i've also been looking into P & F charting as well lately. Basically looking to combine P & F with the TradeGuider teachings and create a strategy from that.

I have some old Excel/Open Office P & F templates that I used years ago but you'll still have to fill them in yourself, presume that's what you meant? Drop me a line if you want me to send em on.

Cheers,

KFT

P.S. dunno how new you are to P & F, but this book is very good - Complete Guide to Point-and-Figure Charting

Yep that would be really helpful. I’ll PM you my email. Cheers

Have found another book which has really good reviews on amazon on point and figure charting. Looks pricey though so might be better to look for a second hand copy.

http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Guide-Point-Figure/dp/1897597630

It's from the same publisher as the one I posted above so it may well be in the same league as that, it being hard back probably adds to the price a bit as well. Other than that, don't have any other knowledge of it i'm afraid!

No worries, I like to dive into lots of books on a subject that I’m interested in and try and get the best out of them for my type of trading.

PS. I had a look at your blog. Seems like the practice account has gone well, so good luck with the real account in the new year. I use Finspreads for my spread betting as well, but mainly S&P 500 and stocks. :)

Thanks for taking the time to have a look man, appreciated! That's the strategy i'll be starting with for the new year and I want to start looking at creating another strategy which is where the P & F comes in. I'll probably start a thread in the Journal section and keep that up to date throughout the coming year.

Currently having data feed and credit card issues so might be starting a bit late

Also, edited my above post with a link (again!) and it looks as though they've a third P & F book available as well.

Yep cheers, I’ve had a quick look at it. It seems to be an original book from the 1930s so might be interesting as well.
