I would like to announce that, following Jacinto and Charlton's recent departure as moderators, that we have a new moderator starting today.

Lightning McQueen is giving the role a try to see how it works out; welcome, LM :)

I also have one or two other people in the pipeline who will be announced as/if and when.

If you're interested in becoming a mod or finding out more about it please let me know.

Good luck, Don! I'm sure we will all try to give you an easy time during the breaking in period. After that, we'll be as naughty as always. :)

Regards Split

Splash the cash

Hi Matt

I'm being totally serious and sincere now (as per usual) -

What i can't believe about the T2W moderator JOB, is that it is unpaid, yet requires time, commitment & hassle, probably comparable to the amount of hours you, sharky & EK1 put into T2W.
Sharky (i expect) no doubt makes a very good living from the sponsors adverts within this website. Which no doubt is what pays the wages of yourself & EK1.

Therefore, how is it justified having voluntary moderators? What is in it for them? Isn't it time to start paying the moderators?

Thanks.

Mmm.

Don, forget my post. Looks as if JTrader is getting stuck in from the start. :p

Are you expected to answer that on your first day? :cheesy:

Well, like it or not, my questions are serious, and as per usual involve no malice :| :) .

T2W is Sharky’s actual business and built up by him so anyone would expect him to make an income from it.

This is common practice amongst most specialist interest bulletin boards so there is no argument to say that T2W should be any different. The advantage is that those who have an interest in the subject through enthusiasm, rather than paid employees, are more likely to give better quality moderation.

Isn't it time to start paying the moderators?

In my view this would detract from the spirit of moderation and because moderators are not paid I think they attain a much higher level of respect than would otherwise be the case.

If the decision is made to pay moderators are you also happy to pay a membership to be part of T2W ?

Paul

T333 has fairly accurately summed things up there.

However it is fair to say that I normally arrange a thankyou for the mods at Xmas time. Last year Barjon and JumpOff got either a few bottles of plonk or some vouchers - I can't remember which - so we don't totally ignore them and expect something for nothing.

The role of the mod does not involve anywhere near the amount of work or time that I spend on the site, for what it's worth.

I would not pay to be a T2W member. The idea behind the funding of a website like this is that sponsors adverts draw in members of the website, attract new business for them more than making up for the cost of the adverts, and at the same time making a handsome profit for the website owners.
I know that the T2W full-time employee positions are WELL-paid, as i remember seeing the adverts at the time. This then leads me to suspect that there is no shortage of cash flowing into T2W - coming from the advertisers.
IMO - to have a T2W "team" that includes 2 well-paid people, plus an owner who makes a healthy profit, alongside voluntary "T2W team members" is not very fair and presumably does not do a lot for the team spirit. Whether the mods are paid or unpaid, i don't think this will affect their levels of attained respect by fellow T2W members.

My main point is, i think paying the moderators a modest wage would
A) Help retain the services of moderators for more than a few weeks, before they decide they've had enough
B) Would go some way towards recognising their skills and values as adults.

Again, its only my opinion - a few wine tokens is better than nothing, but with 2 well-paid employees and owner, i can't help think that the balance of the T2W team might be a bit wrong.

The moderators largely do a fantastic job that requires extra, time, effort & commitment. I think they deserve a better deal, and this will only benefit T2W.

I've played on teams where some members get paid and other members do not get payed, and i can tell you - it really does not do team spirit a lot of good  - especially when the paid members prove less valuable than the unpaid members. I found that the unpaid members continued to do themselves justice in having a professional attitude, and so did the "pro's", but the superior amateurs did make the pros look a bit stupid  , making a bit of a farce of "those" situations.

How someone decides to run their business is none of your concern. The fact that recently two mods have left is not grounds for changing the way that this site and thousands of others operate using moderators.

I think you are very much pushing your luck with this comment

If you re-read my comment you will see that i was referring to the teams that "I" have been a member of. Please Do Not try & make out that i have said something i have not   .

JT,

I dont think you are comparing like for like.
Sharky and his salaried team clearly have tasks in addition to their moderating.

I suspect that their positions reflect their technical expertise with respect to how the site is run, and fine-tuning it, and securing the servers, etc.

The moderating tasks do not require such knowledge, and consequently can be out-sourced to the unpaid members, as it doesnt require excessive technical ability, just good common-sense and strong character. And endless patience.

So I think your paid v unpaid, is not entirely a valid comparison, with regards to the total duties involved of the two groups, in that the salaries are for specialist technical skills.
The moderating may just come in handy as they are always available.

EDIT: good luck, LM. :)

I thought in the last round of moderation debate, it was generally agreed by the members that the "T2W team" members, ie: Rosso, Sharky & EK1, would not be involved in general moderating, for reasons of perceived partiality...?

Fair enough. I am just pointing out that the mods. do an essential job to maintain the smooth running of the site. They do not get paid for it.
I therefore do not see any incentive for any member to become a mod. Its a thankless task, and this maybe also reflects why so many quit. If T2W paid the mods, perhaps they'd stick around longer, and T2W would benefit further, and it would become less of an ongoing issue in terms of a moderatorless T2W.

There are many, many examples of people who do important work for which they do not get paid. There is an entire sector devoted to it: volunteering. Sadly you're just confirming the stereotype of the average trader being interested in nothing other than the size of their own wallet. There is more to life, JT.

You're wrong. I've offered my opinion as to one way in which this good website can improve further.
You may disagree with me.
However, one thing you cannot disagree with is this. Paid moderators would make T2W more "professional". Thats a fact, as there'd be more people on the pay roll.

I've now said all i've got to say on this subject.

Quite correct!

 . It sure does kill time though, and break up a routine task. Small regular breaks etc. And i do like debates.

Hope your trading is going well rols, and long may it continue :D .

LOL. By that splendid bit of deductive reasoning, Royal Mail is more professional than Goldman Sachs, as it has several times more people on the payroll.
