Missed conditional offer for RBS UKCB

Hey guys,

I just wanted some advice on what I can say in my meeting to try and get onto the RBS graduate programme. It is such an amazing offer I really need/want this.

I was made an offer and one of the conditions was that I had at least a 2.1 in any degree. I got my results today and I have a mid 2.2.

I got my contract too and I sent it off ASAP (before I had my results) and I know that I have not met one of the conditions.

It is really upsetting me because I have always been very hard working (straight A's up until I reached degree level where my school is VERY competitive and the people are incredibly smart) and I am really broken down...

I go to one of the top 5 schools in the country, doing a related degree to the field and have interned at investment banks, financial services and volunteered.

I am just lost on what I can do to try and salvage my offer.

Please I don’t want any replies that slate RBS because I have fallen for that place.

By mid 2.2 do you mean 65% or literally middle of the percentage bands? I've heard a few uni's give 2.1 on 65% depending on how you have done in certain modules. Also, if you are on the boundary line you can appeal and they may change it.

I'd imagine that as you haven't got the 2.1 which is a condition of your offer then they will withdraw the offer. You will need to provide the degree certificate as proof or maybe they check with the uni directly nowadays?

2.1 is the minimum of every graduate scheme for major employers. Actually it tends to be the only condition for most schemes. Realistically for them to let you through looks bad on them and their scheme so for that reason I'd be surprised if you get onto it now.

I know a few people I went to uni with and they got offers for big banks/accountancy firms, then got 2.2s and surprise surprise the offer was withdrawn. You might be the lucky one who gets through, but in the current climate and seeing how many unemployed graduates there are out there with 2.1s I think you need to be ready for rejection.

If you have been a straight A student until A-levels, and now you have a 2.2 that to me says you got a bit too confident in your ability to breeze through exams and instead focused on "socialising". I don't think RBS will look on it well if you go into the meeting and start saying the reason you got a 2.2 is because the other students were very competitive.

Are any of your friends in a similar situation? You could ask them how they have dealt with it.

I'm not trying to be harsh on you, but have to be realistic. A lot of grads out there with 2.1 who would kill to have your RBS scheme, and RBS know this. The one thing which works in your favour is the investment banks internship you have done. I would play on this with them and make a point of it.

Don't panic. Be positive, think about how you are going to argue for yourself, then call them up and discuss it. Don't wait for them to contact you. They met you and offered you a job, so they must think you're worth investing in. If the requirement is a 2.1 degree in "any" subject then the requirement appears to be technical only. If you have a degree in a solid subject it may not be an obstacle. A third in some degrees is worth more than a first in others (although I wouldn't argue this with them).
