How do you avoid tiredness when running your own business?

Recently, our entrepreneurs have been saying how tired they are. Matt in Fishbowl One has been travelling all over the country to organise venues for his business launch tour, and has been getting a maximum of 4 hours sleep per night, often sleeping on his friend's floors! He explains in this video how he is so tired but still loving it.

Then there's Dom and Owain in Fishbowl Three. Following the advice of Expert Claire Young (finalist on The Apprentice 2004), the pair took a week long break from their business after becoming so run down that they were losing motivation. They are now back to work refreshed and raring to go.

But how can you avoid this tiredness when you're running your own business? The stress and the ownership can really take it's toll, but when you're the only one working, how can you take time off?

These guys love what they're doing, but eventually it must get you down.

Does anyone have any tips for staying energised and upbeat when you're running your own business?

viagra!

No really, i just set the alarm clock for 7am each morning, get up, and do what i do, regardless of how tired i feel, regardless of how cold it is outside my womb like duvet cover.

Even if i feel tired, i know that as long as ive had a minimum of 5 hours sleep that night, i will easily make it through to 11pm.

Horses for courses.

Depends on the person. I eat a lot and drink plenty of water to keep me energised. There are obvious downsides to drinking too much water though!

Hello Mitida,

The answer to your question is really very simple: Either you run the business or the business runs you.

Freedom is having choices, and freedom among other things is why many start their own businesses. I know many people who have started businesses with freedom being one of their primary reasons for starting the business. Unfortunately, in time, the business ends up taking on a life of its own controlling the life of the owner. In a sense the owner built and trapped him or herself in their own cage.

Really what it comes down to is control. You either have good control or no control. There really is nothing in between. Bad control or partial control is really no control, and tends to smother both you and the business. To stay energised, upbeat and true to your purpose, you need good control of the business in a positive way. Otherwise you are at the mercy of many factors, many of which are random that will take you in unforseen directions and into unforseen circumstances that will likely be undesirable and difficult. Continual adverse conditions tend to negatively impact an individual over time. You become tired and worn out.

Having a business is having a fun game to play, in a sense you are creating. Their isn't much of a game, or at least a game you want to play when you are trapped. Being on purpose, having that freedom, doing what you want, enjoying life and enjoying the game of creating your business and your life, is what keeps you energized.

Good control keeps you on purpose. Staying on purpose is what keeps you energized.

Maximizing the performance of your body with proper diet and daily exercise is a must.

You will still become tired from time to time. Sometimes, you may simply need to take some time off and REST.

I have worked with sleep deficiency over long periods as a carpenter and it really wears your body down to the point where you may damage yourself.

Not recommended :)

Take time away every once in a while.

Go on extra vacations if you are self-Employed. You'll need it to feel reCharged.
