Firefox and Spybot

Since I switched to Firefox from IE the amount of spyware detected using Adaware has dropped off enormously.

However spybot is still picking up stuff when I run it's scan.

I understood that Spybot automatically detected spyware as it appeared as long as it's immunisation was up to date, but this doesn't seem to be the case when using Firefox. At least not for me.

Is there some obscure setting I should adjust on Firefox or on Spybot?

Hi trappertom

I do not think that spybot protects your PC on a real-time basis. You have to manually update, immunize, search and destroy.

SpywareBlaster does a very similar thing to Spybot, you update the files, immunize against new threats, and those threats are then blocked. I think that Spywareblaster has a nicer feel and interface than spybot, but neither protect in real-time.

I think that adaware and spyware doctor provide real-time protection, but not in the free versions.

Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta software program looks really good. Theres just something about running beta software on my PC that scares me. Perhaps I can trust a big softwarfe company like microsoft to release beta software that will be safe to my PC, een though it is still beta software?

Am I being over cautious, or just sensible?

Many thanks

Jt:- Never had a prob nor heard anything other than good reports. A few more posts like this and I shall be re-negotiating my kick-back agreement with Bill G.

Hi Peto

is it not a bit strange that Microsoft have had on offer this free beta version for a year or more?

Perhaps they will eventually ditch it nad stop updating/supporting it, replacing it with a paid for version?

Cheers

Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx runs 3 concurrent real-time checks, is free, and is very good, found things the other (adaware and spybot) progs both missed. One of Mst's better offerings!

Keep an eye on the version number of your spyware definitions with this program, can be monitored by opening the main prog and hovering your cursor over the "Spyware Definitions" header in the list that appears. Reason I mention this is that I have one computer running Win2k pro, that fails to update these definitions, but does not alert you to the fact, quite the opposite actually, it detects a new definition file goes through the process of downloading it, then installing it, and finally shows as updated, however after a reboot of the computer if you check you find that your version of the definitions is once again the old one. Just something to keep an eye on.

This is may be because this was not an original Microsoft product and the company was then bought by Microsoft so it may not have had the same attention as other products.

Also I have noticed that microsofts product is not nearly as effective as adaware or spybot at finding spyware, just seems to pick other bits and peices up... which is probably another reason they havent released it?

Mind you that hasnt stopped them with most versions of Windows in the past !

Eric Howes is the anti-spyware man. Thankfully we don't get many posts in this section nowadays but we've had our problems in the past. You won't find any of my programmes on Eric's site ;)

for a bit of fun, click on the icon next to the word Update in Spybot S&D

Spybot, Antivir & AVG

Can anyone assist with the following please:

1. I have been using AVG for some time but it will no longer be free from January. I am considering Antivir but the free version does not seem to check email. Is that correct? If so is there a good, free, alternative to Avast?

2. Can anyone tell me how to configure Spybot TeaTimer so that when it detects a change I can tell it to accept the change? At the moment it throws up what appears to be a corrupt screen which, when clicked, denies the change.

Thanks in advance

LII

Hi, ws not aware of the situation with AVG , bot AntiVir and Avast! are touted to be among the best free versions out there, you it seems have found a prob or feature absence in AntiVir that bothers you, Avast carries a number of active shields, it's flaw if you like is that there doesn't seem to be any way to shedule scans in the free version. otherwise it seems to work well.

Re Spybot teatimer go here the instructions are easy to follow, don't be put off

I think you are a little confused, or you have seen something somewhere that I have not, (which is equally possible) If you read the extract below, from their website, you will see that Grisoft have just released a new updated free version and will discontinue support for the previous version in Jan.

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and user interface is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007
