The euro has dropped to 1.4230 against the dollar, giving back some of its recent climb. The European currency reached as high as 1.4326 yesterday.The consumer sentiment index fell to a reading of 63.2 in August from a reading of 66.0 in July. The decrease surprised economists, who had been expecting the index to increase to 69.0.The euro was little-changed versus the pound after earlier rising to a 2 1/2-week high. The European currency moved as high as 0.8653 but later fell back to 0.8600.A report published by UK's Council of Mortgage Lenders showed that there were 11,400 cases of mortgage possession in the second quarter, down 10% from 12,700 in the first quarter of the year.
