Books, books, books!

I was looking for a forum of well-educated, articulate and intelligent members but ended up back here.....

Does anyone know of a website similar to IMDB and Rotton tomatoes for those who still prefer the written word? And if not, could someone start one, I'm sure there is room for profit through those pesky advertisers!

Search for some good holiday reading material and all you get is links to Amazon!

No, normal books...... I want nothing to do with trading!




Obviously begs the question 'why ask on a trading forum' but I have an inkling there is a couple of people who may still enjoy a read here!

The American Amazon (if you have no objections) has a system called Kindle. I was thinking about it..You can buy products from the American Amazon site using your UK membership...something I only recently discovered after wanting a book that only the American site stocked...

Cheers new_trader, but no. What I am looking for, is a site like the IMDB (internet movie database) that reviews and outlines books so it is not potluck when I go to waterstones, as the top 20 novels on offer are not generally to everyones tastes, and it would be handy to have a little more insight than just the back cover.

I see. But to be fair, Amazon reviews are by customers who have read the book. I personally think Amazon is brilliant. It builds a database of all the things you have bought and makes suggestions based on these. I haven't bought a book or software or slow cooker or watch or HD camera from anywhere else but Amazon for the last few years.

Good thanks Markus... Nice not having to check in on little candles going up and down every hour! Only looked at a chart once so far since finishing! Not even had any withdrawal symptoms!

If you are thinking about buying that you should check out the BeBook. Doesn't have wi-fi(but that only works on the Kindle in the USA anyway) but can display heaps more formats so you aren't tied down to one store or file type. Also lets you download heaps of different RSS feeds for free so you can load up the news and read it on the way to work if that is your thing.

Seneca is good read Seneca ("letters from the stoic") recommended by Nassim Nicholas Taleb for traders

I have read about 30 movels in my life. Some have been really good. Others have been a let down, that i've known they would be from about the 3rd chapter, but read them to completion anyway - just out of principle.

FWIW - the books that have most stuck in my mind, and spring to mind now are -

A catcher in the rye - J D Salinger (maybe a really good one for teenage boys, though i can see grown ups liking it)
One flew over the cuckoos nest - Ken Kesey (really makes the reader question many themes, norms and standards in society)
The Great Gatsby - F Scott Fitzgerald
Brighton Rock - Graham Greene (30's gangster tale)
The silver sword - Ian serraillier (2nd world war tale of polish family escaping the nazis)
A painted house - John Grisham
The heart of darkness - Joseph Conrad (apocalpsye now was adapted from this)
The Godfather - Mario Puzo (really puts the film/s to shame)

One LONG "classic" that i "started so i finished" was Catch 22. Bit of a damp squib really....
