approaching spreads from technical analysis

Often we hear that calendar spreads, in any given commodity market, follow the fundamentals more closely.

So studying those fundamentals seems like a first point to start. And actually what i try to do.

But i wonder... is it a good approach to study the spread itself from a technical point of view?

I mean: Do you think its good to apply technical analysis directly to the spread chart???
