I came across this paper in the Jan 2006 edition of the Journal of Technical Analysis.
The authors design an indicator that searches through a messageboard on the internet and flag any stocks that have large jumps in post count - basically, they are trawling through thousands and thousands of posts, and picking out the stocks that people are talking about more than usual.
