Hiking / wild camping on Dartmoor, improving my chess, watching films, maybe a meal out, trying new wines.
It is interesting that you mention Dartmoor. Dartmoor is the name of the street in Laguna Beach that I go hiking into the Laguna canyon trails. There is the Laguna Canyon Hills that are behind this gated community called Emerald Bay. The end of the street on Dartmoor leads directly into the hills. You can get to a decent elevation.
Guarded gated community eh...is that to keep you out ?
It was only a matter before your sarcasm reached this thread. I could not very well hike there if I could not get in now could I. There are a lot of gated communities on the beach in the OC. We have them to keep out the bleeding heart liberals. I pay a lot of money to not live next to a hippie.
I don't think the hippies are the problem...unless they are gun carrying ones. Have you ever thought...you wouldn't need guarded gated communities if all the guns were gone !
It is not about the guns. Inlanders have no manners. They do not obey the traffic laws, etc. It is a known fact that crime or at least infractions are committed more by tourists, be it those from the neighboring city or from the neighboring country than those who live in said city. Tourists came from the Latin and has or has had a negative connotation in the past. Tourists were known for causing debauchery since they did not live in the cities they were frequenting.
This still happens today. I can spot somebody a mile away who lives inland. Gated communities are more about structure than anything. They are regulated by HOAs (Home Owner's Associations), which are protected and backed by California law. The HOAs can enforce beautification ordinances. Look at the properties of someone living in Buena Park or Anaheim and compare them to the coast. People take better care of their properties.
If I have spent a lot of time taking care of my property and my neighbors are doing the same, then they do not want aimless hippies wandering around littering and such.
It is sad reflection on life in your area that you feel you need protection from the people. A fence around the housing area will only keep out trivial thieves anyway. If someone is determined to get in then it won't pose much of a problem.
We had a similar problem here in the 12th century. The rich built themselves castles. They are mostly ruins now.

Might catch a dreaded disease from the poor hippies down the road ! Like fleas or poverty. Very nasty.
Oh, I see. You're acting like you're the only one who is allowed to be sarcastic. :cheesy:
Given time you just may develop a sense of humour !
I would quite welcome the idea of living in a gated community, Especially if there was guarded security for piece of mind..do you have any photos of your area HH ?
