Hello all,

There is a lot of stuff about VPS' dotted around the threads.

I thought it would be good to have one thread which contained all the necessary need to know info in one thread.

So please fill it up with useful info.

Personally, I haven't been running an ea, but intend on moving to one soon and on a VPS.

Hello all, long time no see as I've been working some very antisocial hours with no access to my SB accounts from the office, hence my opportunity to trade NT has been severely limited, which is made more annoying by the fact that March was such a good run.

Anyway, I too need to go down the EA VPS route as well. If anyone is going to post details here, as well as the VPS provider, would they mind posting details of the service they use as the couple of providers I've had a quick look at tend to offer different services depending on what you want to do.

Thanks in advance.

Neil.

I'm glad this thread is opened as i would want to go "VPS", esp when on holidays... but that info was all scattered "somewhere" i had to find it (with my busy life i had to find a time when i really wanted it and rummage through all the posts)...(y)

now it should be all under one roof....

So all those members who had talked about or mentioned websited on VPS... could you be kind enough to repost them here... THX

(y) Sounds like a good approach, my post from 24 Feb.

You may find these worth a look if you haven't come across them, they were suggested by FMT author Mark Fric late last year:

http://www.commercialnetworkservices.com/VPS/Windows/Traders/

which Mark says he uses, also

http://www.ultrahosting.com/

http://vpsland.com/

I haven't had the chance to proceed due to personal circumstances, but when I have more time I'll probably be looking at a VPS solution as well.

I don't actually use FMT because I don't have Windows on my MacBook and I couldn't get it to work with the spread trading accounts I have.

Still no further progress due to situation here in Japan, but hoping to get going now UK clocks have changed, JPY has G7 support, no power/network problems so far, and just back from Korea.

This is the one Birt uses with his EA Reviews: http://www.swvps.com/

Personally I use 1and1 a lot, reliable and reasonable with good support. http://www.1and1.co.uk

If you register with http://www.topcashback.co.uk you get money back and the into offers are good.

Couple more options here I've not tried but look interesting for price / features:

I've used 1to1 before and i know a few other people in business that use it say they are really good. So how much would this cost per month (am i right in thinking its around £18-20)?

It's probably worth adding this here.

I've been using the BIOS start-up and scheduled shutdown method for a while now with good effect.
I might graduate to a VPS sometime but for now this serves me well.

You will have to make a separate schedule to shut down mt4 a few minutes before the PC or use the latest v9 in which Spin has added some child-proofing for hard shutdowns of the platform.

I have mentioned on some other threads that I use swtech.ie.

No frills, servers in UK and had no real problems yet. No problems with speed, but i use it only for SLM.

Apparently servers can sometimes get reset (which will turn off MT4) but has happened to me only once in 2 1/2 months.

Priced at about 14 euros per month for basic windows service.

Four FNT Members are already using my Server to host their EAs.

I provide this service only for Non-Technical members, who find signing up and setting up VPS complicated.

I provide EA hosting (not VPS SERVER) for £9 per month which includes following:

1. MetaTrader of your choice installed and configured with FNT EA and set files (provided by you).
2. Fast Server hosted in London so very fast connectivity to brokers in London.
3. Login ID provided with details on how to access your EA Terminal.
4. Server is monitored by my web team, so you don't have to worry about whether VPS is running or not.

I can provide a test account for you to try first.

Bonus:
One month Trading Signals (worth £55) provided.
This is our first month of providing Signals and we have made 168 Pips in first week.
Stats are here: http://www.mt4i.com/users/pipsdailydotcom/stats

Terms & Conditions
1. Only one instance of MetaTrader can be run.
2. If you need more EAs to be implemented, email me. This will be allowed on case to case basis.
3. No access to C drive or other folders.
4. Minimum three months contract with 2 weeks return policy.

For more details PM me

Has anyone tried trading with FXCM? they claim they can provide free VPS if your account is high enough (found this out from the Traders Expo weekend just gone).

Hit by a shocking spasm of intuition I just realised that the best free non-failing VPS I have access to is ... my work PC!!!

unfortunately, my work computer is crap and keeps shutting down, otherwise i would have done the same!

I recommend whether you are on PC or MAC, install Parallels and you can have as many virtual servers as you like on your own computer, personally I run Parallels with Windows XP and 7 for testing.

I think you'd be better off spending the money on a good Vigor Router (£250) with dual line and 3G capability and having redundancy on your home internet connection. £20/month would go a long way to covering those costs. I leave the iMac running 24/7 for months on end without any problems and have never missed a trade due to line outage. Of course if the house burnt down or flooded I'd have to restore some backups that I keep at the office but that would only take a day.

Plus unmanaged servers come with lots of security issues that could cause the inexperienced problems. I think they could be useful for some but not really necessary if you're creative and sensible or on a tight budget.

You must have a much better IT department than I have ever experienced at work.
I've always had hassles with not being allowed to install xyz software, random un-announced user profile changes, server reboots in the middle of the night (read lost internet connection and remote drives etc) and the favorite forced windows updates.

Good idea on the redundant internet connection surferking. I never thought to do that at home. just need to put the router and cable modem on the UPS with my PC and it'll be bullet proof.
Solwise do a nice cheap 3g/wifi router. I use one of these for site work, buy a nice big antenna for it though as they do tend to be location sensitive and mobile provides decrease the range of their data coverage during peak times - you tend to lose signal at random intervals if you are not close to a mast.

This is what I use at home:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draytek-Vigor-2820Vn-Wireless-Ethernet/dp/B001EN7GZO/foxycouk-21

You can hook it up to 2 ADSL lines and a 3g dongle (I use Vodafone PAYG USB dongle).

That way if the fixed line goes down it'll use the mobile network via satellite, pretty easy to setup too.

Wouldn't this be the same Router as the ones you get from BT or Sky (who use NetGear); looks the same with ports... and is the one im using now. But i like the back up usb from the mobile providers.

I've used your idea at the moment (but not bios, i hibernate my pc with MT4 loaded already and in comes on when i schedule the calc.exe to wake from hibernation at 0615). But, when on holiday (or away) i would have to leave my pc on as well as the router wi-fi.

I have a Real-Time Energy Monitor at home and did some energy test. I found that whilst the pc is on (even with the laptop closed {change power settings to stay on when closed} and so the screen is off, I would be using around £20 a month (if not more depending on size and power consumption of pc/laptop). I was surprised how much the wi-fi internet router costs me every month if it was on all the time. I now shut it off after trading and off to work but, needs to stay on over night (just in case i dont wake up... which hasn't happened yet).

When away from home you can't monitor you pc remotely unless you have the necessary package or online subscription (another cost). In addition, its wear n tare damage to the pc being on all the time.

For me personally... I wake up at 0620... PC should be on by then (which it always has done to date, thanks to AlexM), check everything is ok, read msgs on T2W, after 0630, get ready for work, sort the kids out for school etc etc, get about a few min to check what going on around 0740 whilst having my cerial, make packed lunch for everyone which should be heading towards the 0800 time. At this point I would adjust SL to BE on IGIndex.... Now i need to leave home for my rounds of dropping the kids to school and head to work. For IGIndex I can terminate orders off my smartphone by 0830 (cant do this at work as it blocks IGIndex as its classed as a betting website). I would have closed my order at 0830 whilst i'm still in the car at the carpark at work.

Now the home pc running MT4 sometimes switches of and odd times it doesn't (and what a waste of electricity if it doesn't).

The cost and the hassle (for me at least) makes it worth having VPS. Especially with 1&1 servers (mentioned above already) who i know are reliable and i can monitor it using my smartphone anywhere in the world. For £20 a month.... its worth it.... i could prob'y do the tedious long backtests (or optimization) on there and leave it running on Alpari demo (which is what i use it for). Probably cost the same (or even less) in electrical cost but without the hassles (note, i have kids around with sticky and curious fingers too).

I'm going to test this out when i go live with SLM in July 2011 to monitor how the VPS is working for me, and then we will be on Hols for 2weeks at the end of July.

Will keep you posted on how that goes nearer to the time.

What type of router do you have MaxiV? Most routers should not cost much more than £1/month to run. (12v@1A=12w;15p/KwHr;24Hrs/30days = £1.29) and that's worst case power consumption.

I must say I like the tech side and the fact that I have absolute control of the auto start from bios but a VPS is probably going to be the most elegant solution here. Especially when the house is shared with two legged sticky fingered tykes. Fortunately mine are still too short to reach the door handle so as long as I remember to close it the PC is safe, so far at least. I have thought of buying a small "acer revo" type machine and hiding it in the loft...

I'm still looking into the security of VPS though. Do they need their own antivirus/firewall software etc for each VPS or does the provider take care of that for you?

I have the NETGEAR one from SKY (BSB)

There is an offer from 1&1 for VPS:
RAM: up to 4096 MB DDR RAM
Storage: 40 GB (RAID5)
Traffic: unlimited

3 months free then £24.99 BUT, only 4 days left!!

I've been using swtech for a littl eove ra month and it has rebooted three times. They said for an addtional 4 euros a month they would send me a sms whenever it reboots, which seems reasonable as their price of 14 euros a month for the server is very competitive. However, I would rather not have so many reboots to begin with, so think I am now in the market for a new VPS provider.

Surferking, have server resets been an issue on 1&1 ?
